Yes, but you might consider a phone that you buy minutes for with no contract. You can buy a phone and purchase minutes then continue to buy minutes as you use them. That way you don't have a monthly bill, but have a phone to use as needed. If your Dad is not making a whole lot of calls this might suit his needs better and you would not be tied into a cell phone contract. If you have cell phone service yourself you might be able to add him onto your service on a family plan also for an extra 10.00 a month or so.

Although it is a wonderful gesture you must think about how he is going to pay the bill for that cell phone the next time the bill comes in. If you are willing to pay the bill until he is employed again then go for it, if not you might want to think about getting him something that will not increase his monthly debt.

You might consider how he would feel if you paid the bill. Also consider is this something your father will actually use, is he willing to try something new? It's nice that you want to give him a gift, but you might consider giving him the gift of your time. Why don't you plan a little picnic in a nearby park and spend time talking about his life, ask him questions, ask for his advise. He could use the down time and hopefully help him relax a little while.

I think the better Father's Day gift is to find a job for him to do not a cell phone. Everybody needs to do something to make his brain cell working.

Maybe, but I strongly urge you to talk to him directly about your thoughts before you really go and get him a cell phone.
