Being fond of a breed doesn't mean you should get it as a gift. I am very fond of the Afghan but I wouldn't have the patience to train him the way they should be trained. Please make sure that your friend has researched this breed thoroughly. They are NOT a breed for any first-time sight hound owner - just ask any breeder. I really doubt a reputable breeder will sell a show quality Afghan to someone who is going to give him away to someone as a gift (with no sight hound experience).

Check the KC for breeders -> http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk

Just so you know there may be no available Afghans at this time from someone who shows dogs. They may not always have a dog available. There may be a waiting list.
I really don't suggest a dog as a gift. I think the thought is really nice but, what if the person doesn't like the dog? I think it needs to be a decision that the person needs to make. Getting a dog is a huge decision and I think it should be up to the person who will be owning the dog.

Hello! I am in the USA but I can tell you that if you want the best for your friend you may have to contact several breeders and provide references, allowing the breeder to get to know you *and* your friend before buying the puppy. Good breeders are very careful about who buys their puppies and you may have to go on a waiting list. If a breeder is willing to sell a puppy with no questions asked your friend may NOT be getting the best! Be prepared to take your time - you AND the breeder/s need to get to know each other. They want to be sure the puppy will have a good home - and you want to be sure you are dealing with a good and genuine breeder and not a scam artist!

The only place your gonna get a quality show afghan is from a reputable breeder. AND about the only way your gonna get them to agree to this idea is if you give your friend someting like a collar with a phone number and they (the breeder) and your friend make final arrangements themselves.....
