Napoleons with home-made French puff pastry. Honest. I was about 14 and had bought my mother a copy of Julia Childs' Mastering the Art of French Cooking, volume 2 for Christmas. I thought the Napoleon (or mille feuille) recipe looked fascinating... what with the thousand layers of pastry. So I made it. Even the fondant frosting made by kneading hot soft-ball stage sugar syrup on a table, or something to that effect. The whole thing seemed more like a science project than cooking. The Napoleons came out great, which is a testimonial for just how amazing those Julia Childs cookbooks are. I didn't cook anything again until I was 22, at which point I tried cooking French Toast, then proceeded to learning gourmet cooking as a favorite hobby.

My friend and I had just left home and shared a flat together. We decided to cook a chicken but didnt know when to stuff it. So we cooked the chicken and when it came out of the oven all nice and hot - we stuffed it with raw uncooked stuffing!!!

Had to get my thinking ha on here cos it was such a long time ago! I vaguely recall making Cornish pasties at home after we had learnt how to make them in school the previous week. My mum called mine submarines cos they ended up very large! They tasted ok though.

French toast when I was four. My mother and grandmother both had me helping out in the kitchen from the time I could remember. My grandmother was in the kitchen with me, but I did everything myself--I even had to stand on a chair so that I could see what I was doing on the stove.
