I do not believe in Satan. I think Satan is a name given to the darkness that resides inside each of us. If there is a god he would not allow us to be cast into "the fires of Hell".

The Bible explains that God Created many, many spirit persons similar to himself. In the Bible, these spirits are called angels . Also they are called 'sons of God'(Job38:7 ; Psalm104:4)God createed them all perfect. Not one of them was a devil, or a satan. The word 'devil' means slanderer and the word'satan means opposer.
The time came, however, when one of these spirit sons of God made himself the Devil, That is, a hateful liar who speaks bad things about another. He also made himself Satan, that is, an opposer of God. He was not created that way but later became that kind of person. To illustrate: A thief is not born a thief. He may have come from a good family, having honest parents and law abiding brothers and sisters. But his own desire for what money can buy is what may have caused him to become a thief. How, then, did one of God's spirit sons make himself Satan the Devil?
The4 angel that became the Devil, was present when God created the earth and later when the first the first human couple, Adam and Eve(Job38:4,7,)So he would have heard God tell them to have children.(Gnesis1:27,28) He knew that after a while the whole earth would be filled with righteous people worshiping God. That was God's purpose. However, this angel thought a great deal of his own beauty and intelligence and wanted to receive for himself the worship that would be given to God.(Ezekiel28:13-15; Matthew4:10) Instead of putting this wrong desire out of his mind, he kept thinking about it. This led to his taking action to obtain the honor and importance he desired.
The lie the Devil told Eve worked just as he planed. She believed it and so disobeyed God. And she was able to get her husband to break God's law also.(Genesis3:6) The Devils claim was that humans can get along without God. He argued that people can rule themselves successfully, without God's help. The Devil also claimed that he could turn away from God all those who would be offspring of Adam and Eve.
The passage of time has proved that humans cannot rule themselves successfuly without God's help. Their attempts have failed completely. The people have suffered terribly under the governments of men, which, as the Scriptures show, have been controlled from behind the scenes by the Devil. Also, God's allowing time has clearly shown that Satan has not been able to turn all persons away from worshiping God. There have always been some who remained faithful to God's rulership.

God did not create Satan. He created Lucifer. If you are at all familiar with the scriptures, you may know that Lucifer was an angel - one of the best. But like humans, God created every being with a free will, to choose between good and evil. If one truly loves God, he/she will live according to the standards he expects one to live by.
Lucifer, because of his obedience to God, was given great power. Unfortunately, he let the power get to his head, and chose evil rather than good. But he did not leave the heavenly host alone. One-third of the angels decided to follow after him. This is how Satan was “born.”

Two or more answers.
Jesus was the son of God and Satan was his brother,
Satan and Jesus compete and Satan loses then rebels against God. War in Heaven, Space opera! Negroes are the souls who sided with Satan. (Mormon Religion.)
-----------------------------
Angels were created, and do not have free will, (Free will stolen by eve eating fruit).
Satan was an Angel. The best brightest and shiniest.
Satan gives free will to humans and becomes their tempter and tester.
Think of the book of Job.
Satan reports to God and explains what he has been doing when asked.
Satan proposes a test for Job when God brings up Jobs name.
God sets Limits on what Satan can do.
Satan needs Gods permission for everything he does to Job before he does it. (Jewish religion)
Now, adversary or servant, you decide.
Reality or Mythology? Which one?

This question comes up a lot and there is a really simple answer.
God decided to create a being with freewill, the ability to choose. That being is humans.
Once God decided to create a being with freewill God needed to create at least two choices for humans to choose between and God needed to create a place where humans could hang out while they made their choice.
God created heaven as one choice, God rules heaven.
God created Earth as a place from which to choose, God allows humans to rule Earth.
God created Hell as the choice opposite to heaven. God had to create someone to run Hell (since God did not want to hang out there) so God created a selfish and willful being that wanted control more than it wanted comfort and love. This being is Lucifer, Satan.
God waited until Satan got tired of hanging out in heaven and then told Satan to go to Hell and Satan, selfish and willful as Satan is, decided that being the "leader" of Hell was better than being an equal to everyone else in Heaven.
Satan still has to follow God's commands and is still a servant of God, running the "poor" choice.
This is all common sense.

God created myriads of angels.
One of them rebelled and became Satan.
Similar to you having a child that you hope will become a doctor who discovers a vaccine to cure the world, but instead he chooses to become a mass murderer.

Satan.
Definition: The spirit creature who is the chief adversary of Jehovah God and of all who worship the true God. The name Satan was given to him because of his becoming a resister of Jehovah. Satan is also known as the Devil, because he is the foremost slanderer of God. Satan is described as the original serpent, evidently because of his using a serpent in Eden to deceive Eve, and for this reason “serpent” came to signify “deceiver.” In the book of Revelation, the symbolism of a devouring dragon is also applied to Satan.
From where did Satan come?
All of Jehovah’s works are perfect; he is not the author of unrighteousness; so he did not create anyone wicked. (Deut. 32:4; Ps. 5:4) The one who became Satan was originally a perfect spirit son of God. When saying that the Devil “did not stand fast in the truth,” Jesus indicated that at one time that one was “in the truth.” (John 8:44) But, as is true of all of God’s intelligent creatures, this spirit son was endowed with free will. He abused his freedom of choice, allowed feelings of self-importance to develop in his heart, began to crave worship that belonged only to God, and so enticed Adam and Eve to listen to him rather than obey God. Thus by his course of action he made himself Satan, which means “adversary.”—Jas. 1:14, 15;
