"Isn't that something only dead people know about? "
On a personal basis you are quite correct. But just like you can know about China without ever having been there so too can you know about the afterlife by reading what Jesus had to say about it.
"If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. John 3:12-18

Our faith is built on the foundation of Christ return as well as His death and resurrection. Christ while on earth talked about heaven. He said there would be many mansions. Also talk about his return one day and that only His Father new the time. Heaven is a place to be with God 24/7 with out evil.

You can know about something even when you haven't experienced it...yet.
We know about it because God tells us that we have eternal life. We talk about it because we have a scant...maybe 80 or so years to figure it out and turn towards God and salvation.

Jesus knew about it, and said it would be pretty bad for those who weren't very nice to others. That's all I need to know.
