Isn't it more selfish to believe that you are this wonderful being that is going to live in paradise, while everyone who doesn't agree with you is going to burn in hell for eternity?

I would think that christianity is the height of selfishness in that regard.

There is no doubt that most christians are extremely selfish. They want to force everyone to behave as their delusions dictate, rather than letting other believe as they wish.

because they seem (those believing in christianity or most religions...) that it is their god given right to inflict their belief on those around them to try to better those peoples lives...

rather than just leaving them alone - don't they know the saying god helps him/her/it who helps themselves ..

but as I don't believe in god I sort of lump all religous people in a scary pile I would rather avoid (well that subject anyway ... not really avoid the people... I know little about religion besides knowing that i don't trust it...).

I don't think christianity is all that bad as it at least has adapted and follwed the world around it whereas some religions (sigh... islam.. maybe... please don't hurt me for saying this!) seem to be mired in the past and hasn't advanced with time and people - like where christianity was a few hundred years ago (remember the tales of burning heretics and unbelievers or forcing people to convert.....).

but I guess we shall see what happens - as only history can really tell what is going on - we can make guesses all we like....

this is in view that's a daft declare. that's resembling asserting which you're a communist yet you have faith interior the capitalist way. the only way something like which could take place is whilst you're forced to be one way, in public, yet experience yet differently mentally. case in point, i understand lots of people who have been born right into a christian kin, who have not got faith of their faith. they don't tell their mothers and fathers because of the fact they don't want to disillusioned them, yet they experience the choice way none the fewer. The collaboration of christianity and atheism is resembling the collaboration of an electron and an anti-electron. They cancel one yet another out. If an atheist ever claims that he follows the bible, he's blowing smoke. What he ability to declare is that he appreciates a number of the ethical teachings of the bible, yet alternatives and chooses what to have faith. case in point, if he works on sunday (the sabbath day), he's committing a sin punishable by means of dying. If he lie's or disrespects his mothers and fathers, and is not bodily punished, he isn't following the bible! If he would not forgive absolutely everyone and love absolutely everyone and supply all his time and money to assisting others, he isn't following the bible! don't be shocked nevertheless; In as we communicate's day and age, that's merely approximately impossible to locate somebody who would not %. and decide what to have faith from their bible.

Christians say this because you are "self" centered, not "God" centered. Most rely on humanistic philosophy, based on reason and the mind. Christians rely on the living God, based on love and the Spirit.

We, like God, do not wish anyone to perish. It is not that we are "this wonderful being"... we are just like you, just forgiven by the grace of God. It is your choice and decision about the belief or hell part. We are not here to "force" you to believe, but we will share what God has said about it. You can't say that you have not been warned.

I think that atheism is "self centered". An atheist believes that they possess the wisdom to know whether or not they were created by a divine being who has a purpose for their existence or if they are a cosmic accident who can in effect be the "god" of their own life, the captain of their destiny as it were.

As to Christians thinking "that you are this wonderful being that is going to live in paradise" you only have it half right. The Bible teaches that ALL have sinned and fallen short of God's glory. It doesn't tell us that we are wonderful people. It tells us that we are sinners whom God has saved because of his love and grace and mercy.

"For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 1 Corinthians 1:26-29

"And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience-- among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ--by grace you have been saved-- and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:1-9

If you are an atheist, doesn't it stand to reason that you have no idea what Christians believe?

Christianity teaches us to give up our will for God's will. This is the height of "unselfishness."

The atheists I know aren't selfish but they seem self-centered at times. How does one determine what is right and wrong in terms of morals, values, ethics as an atheist? Wouldn't it be what ever you felt was right or wrong for you or what ever benefited you?

Only an atheists could come up with this rational.
Most Christians try to live a life that benefits others. Most atheist only live a life that benefits themselves. (Notice i said most not all in both cases)

Well .... In Christianity we try to take people with us - that is why many Christians evangelise.

For example, would you care to accept Christ and join us in Paradise?
