The sceneario:
I will be 48 on Tuesday. Last July I had a hysterectomy. Ever since, I've steadily gained weight. I've procrastinated any kind of diet or exercise program, because in my mind I feel like a lost cause. It's been almost a year now, and I have got to begin some kind of change because I am almost 230 pounds. It is mainly my mid section. I almost look 4-5 months pregnant! I feel so defeated, I don't know where to start.
What I need is a BEGINNERS program. My diet is out of control, I don't seem to have any will power...as I feel defeated, I eat unconciously. Being 48, I don't know how to get into any kind of shape. I see people running, and I would so much want to be able to do that someday..... but it seems hopeless.
Is there a "transistion" program I can follow that won't be intimidating, or discouraging? Thanks for reading and your answers.

I understand how you feel. I'm bedridden and I gained a lot of weight from not being able to move and eating out of depression. I was able to lose a hundred pounds once I really made up my mind. So it can be done, do not give up on yourself.

I really think "weight watchers" is the best program because you can learn how to eat correctly and go to meetings for emotional support. I think their diet program works better than any.

Don't try to do big exercises in the beginning. Just a short fifteen minute walk once daily is going to kick your metabolism into operation and it will also help with your depression. slowly increase the walking time.

To help stop cravings for food I use chromium tablets, one three times daily with every meal. To help me stop overeating I use the supplement L- Glutamine one tablet first thing in the morning with a large glass of water and wait one hour before eating. Do this one hour before lunch and dinner. If you follow the supplements within one week you are going to be shocked at how you don't crave food. This is how I lost 100lb..

if you have any further questions please let me know,

A few tricks to weight loss:
- DON'T STARVE YOURSELF; Your body will think that there is no food so it will slow down your metabolism
- Eat 6 (small!) meals per day
- Try not to have snacks between those meals
- If you must have a snack, drink some water or tea about 10 minutes beforehand. Then if you are still hungry have some fruit.
- Always eat a low gi breakfast
- Try not to eat too much at night because those kilojoules will not get burned while you are sleeping.
- Don't not eat anything in the morning then think that you can eat some chips or chocolate late at night.
- Keep a thermos of tea or water with you so if you get hungry you can drink that.
- Find yourself a snack that you like that is not a junk food like unsalted, unbuttered popcorn or apples. If you need a snack eat this or some fruit/ vegetables.
- Find a friend who likes running and organize to go running a few times a week. Have a set time and stick to it. If you have a friend with you then you can't just not go because you would be letting down your friend.
- Try doing 10-20 sit ups in the morning and then again in the afternoon.
- Don't give up! Think about how good it would be to lose that weight...

As a transition, run for 5 minutes per day then after a few days add another few minutes. Keep this going and then after a few months you should be able to run for quite a long time.

Skipping is a very good alternative if you don't like running. Try just 5 minutes a day... then 10... then 15 etc...

Good luck

Happy birthday for Tuesday Marge. I'm nearly 45, and I had a hysterectomy in October 2005. I put on a fair bit of weight after the op, but it all came off in the couple of months following. I went on one of those powdered meal replacement programs. I couldn't stick to it though, and some of the weight came back. I would suggest Weight Watchers..... when I was a member, the first week I remember feeling a bit depressed, I was eating so much food, I surely couldn't lose any weight..... but I dropped 7 pounds in that first week! Don't bother running.... try walking, if you like... or cycling.... that's a lot more fun. don't drive to the corner store to pick up a carton of milk.... walk. Get an exercise video, and do it in private in front of your TV. Good luck Marge, I'm sure you can do it.

You don't have to go on a diet just eat what you're supposed to eat. Use portion control and walking to help you lose weight. That's what my daughter did and she has lost almost 40 pounds in the last 10 months. You should also talk to someone and see if your change in eating is because you're depressed about the operation,. Its not unusual for women who have had a hysterectomy to become depressed because they no longer feel as a full woman. Talk to your doctor and see what they have to say. You should talk to them first any way before starting any kind of life change so that they can help monitor you, Good Luck

I am not sure where you live, but I am sure there are lots of fitness studios near your home. Don't be nervous and just walk in! Tell the people at the front desk that you are interested in an exercise plan that is tailored to your needs and abilities, and they will have somebody sit down with you and chart it all out . You could even have a trainer there help you with your exercising if you feel like you could use a bit of friendly motivation. Don't worry! They start with what you can do and then gradually work you up at a comfortable pace. Plus there are sure to be swimming classes available which is a wonderful stress free total body workout. They have people come in of all ages, shape, and sizes, and I am sure you will be able to get on to the road to fitness with their help. What are you waiting for... Go for it!

I would suggest walking first. My dad is 56, so he doesn't do any "heavy" exercise, but he walks because it is a low-impact, easy exercise to start with. Start with walking down the street or around your block every night, then gradually increase that to longer distances once you feel comfortable.

You could also join a gym; my aunt also had a hysterectomy last year and she exercises regularly at an all-women's gym. No men are allowed and the windows are covered with blinds, so the members don't feel embarrassed or intimidated.

Good luck -- don't feel defeated, because it's never too late!

I would suggest a cleansing diet. I did this and lost 12 pounds and 19 inches in 9 days. I continued and lost 29 pounds in a month. I like the program since it works by giving your body nutrition through protein shakes with digestive enzymes and vitamins and then cleansing out the toxins. We get toxins in our bodies from pesticides, preservatives, water, pollution, medications, food additives etc…. These toxins enter our bodies and get stored in our fat cells. To shrink the fat, we need to get rid of the toxins through cleansing. The program also has a natural diet pill to help your metabolism and curb cravings. It works and it works fast. My skin has improved from the cleansing. It is pricey but worth it! I think cleansing is really important to health and weight loss. I have found flylady.net really helpful, she has a book out called body clutter, is not really a diet plan but more a different way of thinking about food and yourself, it helped me to build up my self esteem and get out of my depression and then in doing that I have been able to loose weight, she isn't intimidating at all. but she has a lot of love for all her flybabies, I now it kind of sounds strange, but I recommend her. Flylady.net is more about decluttering your home, it does cost for her book on bodyclutter but it is free to join her site and for all her emails. she has changed my life so much, she breaks everything down into small easy step by steps. You can just go to the site and check it out doesn't cost you anything good luck
you could start by exchanging some of your food products for low fat or lite eg, lite milk, equal sugar instead of sugar, lite yogurts, lite cheese, etc
and maybe go for a walk each day sat a timer on your phone or something for seven minuets and walk then when the timer goes off turn around and come home its a only start, remember its a walk not a stroll so push yourself a bit

every journey starts with a single step.Don't feel so defeated as you are not be positive. there are so many people who even cant walk,so look the positive side and start working on your way to be slim and smart.
some time people gain weight because of their mind it's some time psychosomatic.so imagine yourself in good shape the shape that you like, before sleeping give some positive suggestion to you three times like I am getting slim and smart and I am keep reducing my weight.
no cold drinks ,cofee or tea at all.avoid oily stuff and rely on vegetable.
start any physical exercise on regular basis it could even be just a walk of 5-10 km initially.

How about trying Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig? You need to get in with some people who can help support you. Both of these programs are quite successful when followed and provide excellent information and support. You can look them up online, too.

P.S. Ignore that first poster "the light", he's RUDE!!
