After keeping my 3 year old rescue cat in for 3 weeks when I first got her, as you are advised to she had a quick look round the road when I first let her out but now seems content to stay in and use her tray even if I leave the door open for her.

cats are a much better pet being indoor then outdoor. I have a calico that's 9 years old now and she is an indoor cat. She'll come outside with me but no further then the steps will she wander. She is also fixed which makes a big difference. She has no urge to go out and get boinked. As for male cats if they are not brought up as indoor cats when they get the urge to take a pleasure stroll out the door they go, could be for days.

Don't let her outside.
Cats are very happy to stay inside. They aren't wild anymore - they don't need to be outside to be happy. Just play with your cat as much as possible and show her as much love and attention as you can. My 3 cats (ages 6 months, 8 months and 1 year) are all fully indoor cats and are very happy to stay inside. They love to play, sleep and groom each other and they show my family HEAPS of love, attention and affection - something an outdoor cat won't show. Mind you, none my cats have EVER tried to run out the door while it's open or jump out a window. Saying that, we only leave the windows open enough for them to smell the fresh air and shut the doors quickly. Even when we have the doors open wide, neither do any more than just sniff the outside world from a meter or 2 inside.

It completely depends upon the cat! Their personalities and preferences are as diverse as those of humans!

One of mine loves to be outside, even in the rain! and wanders further than the others. He'd be utterly depressed if he couldn't go out. One of my others never strays far, and usually hangs around my garden or next door's, coming in frequently. She would probably be quite content if she never went out.

One point though - you say she had a 'quick look round the road' .... is it a busy road? You shouldn't be letting your cat out at all if that is the case, and it may merely be a reflection of your cat being car-shy - a very good thing!

If you're leaving the door open, she obviously doesn't want to go out at all. Stop stressing over it. Many cats are quite content top watch the world go by looking out the window. I call it kitty TV.

I have 6 cats that are perfectly content to be indoors. Letting a cat outdoors is far from rescuing the poor thing. There are so many dangers out there (Cars, other animals that attack, cruel people etc) plus since cats are not native to our eco-system, they are doing alot of damage to native wildlife.

the common stay span of an indoor cat is 12 - 15, exterior is a million - 5 although, certainly one of my cats is an exterior cat is 12 My final cat (lifeless) replaced into an exterior cat and lived to 19 So i assume that is success

I've owned my 1-1/2 yr old cat for about a month, and as soon as I open the door he wants out. I guess I should mention he has not been neutered yet. I think he's looking for some female *****.
