Both companions have good points and bad points.

Rose was designed to connect with the viewer; she left school early, didn't take her A-Levels but still has a lot of compassion and is very intelligent. She helps save the Doctor's life countless times and over her time in the TARDIS, proves her a very worthwhile time-traveller.

Martha, however, is meant to be very academic... she's training to be a Doctor when she enters the TARDIS. It took a while for the Doctor to accept her as a companion, but now he has she is proving herself well (particularly in Human Nature/ The Family Of Blood episode).

In my opinion, I prefer Rose - I just like the idea of the emotional intelligence instead of the academic intelligence. Her relationship with the Doctor was fascinating, and I am sad she is gone.

Although I think this, I am not going to say that Martha fans are wrong - because they are not. Martha is proving to be a very good companion herself.

But, to answer the question, I prefer Rose.

If I had to chose one as a friend it would be Marta she seems a nicer person. Rose was a bit full of herself at times, but I loved the chemistry between her and the Doctor.
I think something is lacking in the series since she went. That doesn't really answer the question sorry!

Rose. At times Martha reminds me of Lauren Cooper in her mannerisms and the way she delivers her lines....a little off putting.

I guess she is in the unfortunate position of replacing someone - Billie Piper had the advantage that it had been years since the last Dr Who and therefore didn't have to compete with a previous actors performance.

Personally I prefered Rose, Martha is alittle off putting but if her character grows then she'll make a good companion.

Martha.
She gets the Doctor out of trouble unlike Rose who gets him in trouble.
