S Is BT wrong?
i am renting a brand new flat as the 1st tennant, there is phone point installed as standard...but BT say i have to pay £124 to connect...is this right as the landlord told me he was told they did it free..can anyone shed some light on this for me? i thought all new flats came with phone lines and satalite dishes

the phone point may be there but the connection from the exchange isn't because the flat is new

the first person pays the connection and it looks like that is you

if the landlord misled you, then you may have a strong case to get him to pay.

The best thing is to look into your contract/ tenancy agreement and see if you have signed up for anything.

It doesn't sound like you were aware to connect the BT phone or agreed verbally to pay the fee, therefore, you shouldn't be paying for any connection fees just the monthly line rental and call charges if he has told you it was free.

You need to speak to your Landlord to clarify the situation, perhaps he wasn't aware of this charge, however, if this is the first time that you are connecting a BT line and/or a reconnection to a property with a seperate telephone number then a charge would be made and that would normally be the customer.

A phone point that has been installed in a new or refurbished flat weather owned by a private landlord or local council. It is not there responsibility to have the phone line connected. Unfortunately weather you are the first tenant or the 100th tenant you will have to pay. It's the same if the phone line was used before, you still have to pay to get connected as the phone number may have been given to another user.

Surely you signed a rental agreement for the flat? What does that say about a 'phone? If it says nothing, then it's up to you and the landlord to sort it out between you.

Have you considered a "pay-as-you-go" mobile 'phone? If you use it only infrequently, then the cost could well be lower than a land-line.

Nothing comes for free these days!

First point ....... Look at your rental contract. If it mentions "telephone" - then it should be working. Have a look at a few Case Histories, under "contracts". If it is mentioned - it should be working. Looks as if your Landlord is being a Greedy "B". Stuff the contract under his nose and say "Pay up Pal - or I sue". That will get him moving.
Look at website www.contracts.com follow the prompts to Landlords/Tenants. It will give you a run down of items. I have rented many times. I find Landlords are greedy and will try it on. BUT, stand up to them - the threat of Court action works wonders. Good luck to you.

The landlord is NOT responsible. Unless it is stated in your contract that he'll provide you with an actual phone line and satellite tv etc, then it is your responsibility. If he's said he thought it was free, try asking him WHERE its free, as you were quoted £124 by BT. If its not free, its your responsibility to pay it, even if the landlord got his facts wrong.

As it is a permanent installation to the flat,it will remain after you leave, it is the landlords responsibility to supply a working phone point.Similarly he should also provide full TV aerial/dish facilities. These fittings are not for your use exclusively, but for any future tenants of the flat as well.They are as much part of the fabric of the flat as the cooker or the heating,

You shouldn't have to pay for a phone if you didn't request
a phone. Basic utilities are Rent itself, Water, Gas, and
electricity. I wish a Hacker Could hack into the meter and
fool CPS...

In the U.S., we pay to connect the phones. Satellite dishes are extra, too.

he is not obliged to provide you wiht a phone line, althoug hif he said there was one or it was free then he should honour this, but probably wont.

looks like it's pay up or go without, unless you can appeal to his better nature.

alos, try another phone company, prices vary
