I know that there will be a little blood to start with and that her vulva will swell slightly, but I'm wondering what behavioural changes I should look for. As this is her first season with us, as new owners, I would appreciate other people's experiences with their dogs.

My Great Dane starts to eat a lot more than normal a few days before she starts and she also is very diligent about cleaning herself. My Keeshond who is now in menopause used to sleep a lot more and eat a lot less. Both had attitude changes that were subtle and I probably wouldn't have even noticed if they'd be only dogs but they don't play as much and get grouchy with the other dogs easier than normal.

in assessment to females human beings, canines have not got a menopause. not in basic terms do they nevertheless come into season yet they're able to fixing into pregnant (very risky for an older b1tch). which you should to have her spayed, extremely if she has on no account had domestic canines as older b1tches are vulnerable to pyometra ( an infection of the uterus) and that's better to have her spayed if she is in stable wellness now, somewhat than ought to have an emergency operation in a while

She will be more affectionate towards you, will eat more/less (my Dalmatian ate more) and her vulva will swell a lot. Remember, after this heat cycle, get her spayed! You will do her health and our world so much good.

Hi,mine gets moody. The worse part for her is when the bleeding stops has she wants to mate.I reccommend getting your girl spayed.I tried to get mine done only had problem getting rid of weight she is now 13 so they say she is too old.
Up to now she has had 2 phantom pregnancies. She produces milk & it is very dangerous.I take her to the vets were they give me medicine to take the milk away.

there are a couple of ways you can tell when my dog goes into season she satrts to get a bit nasty towards male dogs, if you scratch her on the back near the tail she puts her tail to the side also she tends to go to the toilet more hope that helps.

you will find every male dog in neighbourhood lurking near your home... when my little one was in season she had an admirer used to sleep on my front doorstep... oh and she loved it too she got very frisky... best if you do take her out to keep her on a short lead...

if you suspect she is coming into season tap her hips...she will have a reflex she doesnt normally have. the vet will show you how if you are unsure, they do that all the time. you know the rest of the symptoms..good luck!
