I'm going to Perth this summer with my friend to celebrate the end of our exams and it will be winter in Australia when we go. What is the average temperature at that time of year? What kind of clothes are suitable, can you still wear shorts and a tank? Thank you! Sorry, I'm so naive!

I have lived on the East coast all my life (Melb/Sydney etc) and now live in Perth! The Winters here are very very mild. All this week it is 21 deg....cool nights but glorious warm sunny days. It is the best place in Aussie to be in our so-called 'winters' !!

Well I live in Sydney and during winter we have the fire in the fireplace going every night, and I always turn my electric blanket on before going to bed. Australia isn't all sun, sand and surf, and yes we do get snow in winter in the Snowy Mountains (they're not called "Snowy" for nothing).
Perth is at approximately the same latitude as Sydney so one would assume it would be around about the same temperature. Today in Sydney was 16 degrees celsius (sorry, I don't know what that is in farenheit - Australians use the far superior metric system).
On a windy, rainy, or just particularly cold day i always wear at least 2 or three layers. T-shirt, long sleeved top and then a jumper or jacket. Jeans are usually warm enough by themselves for your legs.
I also think it's silly when you see people wearing thongs in winter (lol i don't mean underwear, in Australia, thongs are a type of footwear that are kind of like sandals - definitely NOT underwear) because I can never see how their feet are warm enough.
But in winter in the temperate lattitudes, you'd definitely need more than just shorts and a t-shirt

It's already sort of winter now. But this what is called "winter" is rather like European or Northern American autumn (hmm, fall, you call it). So I' have seen people there wearing really warm woollen jumpers and shorts and thongs.
I think if you only stay in Perth and around you're fine wearing jeans, t shirts, a jumper, sneakers. Don't forget your umbrella or a raincoat. If you seem to feel chilly take a light jacket or coat with you.

I stay in Houston TX. The weather right now is all right! The sun is barely coming up, it's 79 degrees, so it's good! BUT later on in a couple of hours it's going to reach 94 degrees and it's going to be partly sunny, so that means dry and humid!!! o_O WISH IT WAS WINTER ALREADY =)

Um.... We are in winter! lol. Scrap Perth.... Go to the Gold Coast in Queensland. All you need is shorts and shirts and a jumper. Gold Coast temperature only gets down to 14 degrees Celsius at night (around 60 degrees Fahrenheit). The Gold Coast is where Australians holiday. Remember legal drinking age is only 18 in Australia! Be sure to stay close to the beach (even know its winter, its where everything happens) and maybe in "Broadbeach" or "Surfers Paradise".

Australia such a big country.I've been to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth...and it is a beutiful places to be visit to.
If you plan to go during winter i advice you to bring some extra clothes especially thick ones.
Shorts and tanks???Duh...better not if you do not want to get fever.
But it is not as cold as Siberia. In Perth you just have to wear at least 3pieces of clothes plus winter coat.

well probably the best weather in terms of average all year round would be Adelaide (not including Darwin or Brisbane).
Perth winters are very cold.

Ok .. I'll speak in layers ... I live in Melbourne .. generally has the reputation as being one of our colder cities .. GENERALLY speaking ... I can get away with only wearing two layers( not counting bras and undies) .. OCCASSIONALLY I may have to resort to wearing a coat .. but we don't have to worry about being snowed in :)
