If there is nothing to believe in, why bother? Is it out of some noble notion of philanthropy, then why are the arguments so contemptuous and derisive?

That is a large part of it -people think that because atheists don't believe in a higher power they don't have any personal beliefs, values, morals, etc.
Also, look at some of the responses you received -religious people are ALWAYS trying to convert/condemn atheists rather than just live and let live.
Furthermore, their lives are constantly being dictated by the beliefs of others. I personally don't try to impose my views on others and resent the fact that so much of my life -and even my government - is swayed by religious beliefs that are not mine.

I think atheists just get really ticked off when some bonehead tells them they're gonna rot in hell for being a sinner when they neither believe in sinning nor in hell, for that matter. Theists have a bad habit of pushing people's buttons by quoting the Bible which atheists ALSO don't believe is valid. Theists then, just come across as a bunch of brainwashed looneys. Hence, the animosity.

Imagine why so many other beliefs both religious and secular are left unworried by the militant atheist. Yet Christ and His love come in for more attack than anything else on earth.
Perhaps because it is true.

I'm not sure, not being an atheist, but I do know that it goes both ways. The theists seem to always have something derisive to say to the atheists.

The taking of over 100 million lives due to religion/sectarian violence should not be ignored, yet religions and the followers don't want to talk about it. How will history judge us when they can say, "They killed over 100 million people in the name of God and everyone looked the other way. What was wrong with those people?"

one time there was two people one bleaved in god the other did not wile thay were talking about this the one who did not had to go th the bath room when he came back the other hade a newly writen pome when he shode it to the other the one that did not beleve in god sayed this is a grate pome did you write it the other one sayed no wile you were in the bathroom i spiled a vile of ink and behold a pome appered on this paper then the other sayed how can you think i would belive this crap like a pome could just apear out of nowere then the one who belived in god sayed if somthing as simple as this pome could not just happen to be how could thid hole world as we know it just happen tho be
