And vice versa. It gives you both something to do.

You wrote, "If there is nothing to believe in, why bother?"
That is a large part of it -people think that because atheists don't believe in a higher power they don't have any personal beliefs, values, morals, etc.
Also, look at some of the responses you received -religious people are ALWAYS trying to convert/condemn atheists rather than just live and let live.
Furthermore, their lives are constantly being dictated by the beliefs of others. I personally don't try to impose my views on others and resent the fact that so much of my life -and even my government - is swayed by religious beliefs that are not mine.

I think atheists just get really ticked off when some bonehead tells them they're gonna rot in hell for being a sinner when they neither believe in sinning nor in hell, for that matter. Theists have a bad habit of pushing people's buttons by quoting the Bible which atheists ALSO don't believe is valid. Theists then, just come across as a bunch of brainwashed looneys. Hence, the animosity.
Que sera sera.

thank you: i'm a working in direction of Christian and a minimum of you're an honest individual. Christians listed right here are noted as. a million. Cannibals 2. Irrational, stupid, moronic, uneducated 3. church homes are accused of 'stealing" money from people who basically provide to the ministry because of the fact they choose the expenses paid 4. Endangering efficient close by cultures with the aid of challenge artwork, which invovles forbidding close by tribesmen from digging up the lifeless (spreading anthrax and etc in villages), ingesting the brains of the deceased and working in direction of genocide agains their associates. All of those eye-catching close by customs are purely an determination way of life and could be preserved. not purely that, they could be celebrated as cultures equivalent to our own.

Because of this little nagging voice inside his or her head which says "child, what if you are wrong"?
"All men alike stand condemned, not by alien codes of ethics, but by their own, and all men therefore are conscious of guilt." Lewis --The Problem of Pain
They seek release from their own condemnation.
Imagine why so many other beliefs both religious and secular are left unworried by the militant atheist. Yet Christ and His love come in for more attack than anything else on earth.
Perhaps because it is true.
or perhaps because His followers on earth do not love the way He loves, and the atheist dislikes hypocrisy.................
or a bit of both of the above

I'm not sure, not being an atheist, but I do know that it goes both ways. The theists seem to always have something derisive to say to the atheists.

The taking of over 100 million lives due to religion/sectarian violence should not be ignored, yet religions and the followers don't want to talk about it. How will history judge us when they can say, "They killed over 100 million people in the name of God and everyone looked the other way. What was wrong with those people?"

Towelie and Cindy's answers should tell you why sometimes the argument gets a little heated.
And not all atheists do this, and not all theists are nice gentle people.

It's always the other way round, I'm sorry. Theists are suffering from a god delusion and they should be in a mental hospital.
