Please: I don't want to get answers that he DOES care from people who are saying this because they have been raised to think he cares about you. I want intelligent answers, if any exist. I myself am agnostic, so this is somewhat a hypothetical question.

Say God DID create the world. Why would he watch over us? Why would we care? I mean, a parent will abandon his/her own child - God has BILLIONS of us. Really, we're no more than ants to him. Even if he DOES exist and he CAN hear us, why would he listen?

That is a thought that blows me away as well. It just seems so outrageously arrogant and self glorifying to believe that such an omnipotent, all-knowing, all-powerful being would give a rats *** about a bunch of bumbling shaved apes like humans.
Where do they come up with this ego-trip that in all of creation human life is more sacred, more important, more necessary... than any other life in the universe? To assume that all "lower life forms" were just created to serve and entertain us. Humans have no more or less right to exist than any other creature.
What kind of mentality can cling so desprately to beliefs that couldn't be true unless all the galaxies in so vast a universe were made just to be pretty lights for our viewing pleasure?

Sorry. Not buying it ...can't make me swallow something that reeks of BS so badly I could puke.

This is a much better question than the answer you gave earlier. Like you, my father was an agnostic, mother was Muslim and sister was/is atheist. I was confused. After my ordeal (awakening, whatever you want to call it), I realized there HAD to be more to life than the nothing my sis believed in because I believe I witnessed something I cannot describe accurately or with any proof. I can live with that. It also ruled out agnosticism because, imo, to sit on the fence is akin to not having faith (another subject I won't get into). That left the belief in Islam. Since I have lived all but 3 years of my life here in the US, it would be foolish for me to think that by celebrating all the holidays, eating pork, going to school, obeying the laws, reading the Bible, studying different cultures, adapting and adopting the customs of everyday American life, that I could in any way relate to Islam. In fact, I was living a Christian life the whole time. Some will say that I was indoctrinated and that is fine, but they do not truly know me and what I have experienced in my life, so it doesn't matter to me what others think in that respect.

To answer your question Wings, I would say that we cannot know for certain. I believe there is a reason for all the ill in the world. Without it, how would we know good from bad? How would we ask these questions? I don't think we were meant to know how God works. If God created the world and everything in it and the Universe and everything in it, then how could I possibly question why Someone so mighty would do anything? If you focus on why a particular situation is the way it is and blame God for it then your rational will break down to simply why do we exist? If we knew the answer to that then we wouldn't need God, would we. Likewise, many who become so frustrated to such a question, give up on the answer and God altogether because it is easier to ignore it than to believe such a God exists.

I also believe that in our time, God is far removed from us. He is watching, ever present and all knowing, but whether he interferes in how a person's life plays out is something I don't know, though I doubt it. I think that is left to others. Life is a test. Call it what you will, a test of faith, belief, morality, whatever. But what you do in every situation in life determines what type of person you are. Bad things happen to good people. Even terrible things. And good things happen to other people. Do you think everyone who hits the lottery for millions are Saints? It's unfortunate that it takes a life altering experience for some to understand this, but perhaps it is better than the emptiness of the alternate. It is a hard choice for some to make and too hard for others, but it is not my purpose to make anyone a believer. Maybe that is a sin but I am prepared to accept it because it is not on my priority list of things I need to do to improve my life with God right now. I hope you can find some kind of solace in these answers but your life is not over if you don't. Who knows what the future holds for you and what your outlook will be then.

I too am agnostic, but I have ideas as to why God would care.

Imagine how much fun He must have had making all the flowers and the butterflies on this planet. If you could make a flower or a butterfly, would you want to see even one of them hurt or destroyed before its time? I wouldn't! That's just ONE example.

I am an artist and I'll tell you ... when I create something like a painting, it is my precious child, something I've worked hard on with love and devotion. I care very much about it and I believe God would love every flower, rock, tree, bear, dog, bird and human he handcrafts too. I've created well over 500 paintings and I haven't lost interest in ANY of them yet. All of them are my favourites.

So why would He watch over us? Because of the love an artist or a creator has for his or her works! And why would he care, if he has billions of us? Well, I'm just a measly little human being artist and I still love every painting, sketch, piece of jewellery or clothing I've ever designed and created. For a God who can make worlds ... well, I'd say a few billion people and animals and trees and flowers would be no challenge at all to love!

IF there is a God, rest assured that He loves you to bits and knows you out of every other life form on Earth. That's kind of a nice feeling, huh?

:)

Maybe god has a sense of justice. If you have sole dominion over anything, there is the desire to exert control. If you were watching over a female dog and her puppies, would you not move the bigger puppies out of the way so the runts have a chance to eat? Similarly, god has the ability to exert control, punish the guilty, protect the innocent etc. Why would he turn a blind eye? With that said, I am an athiest.

Why would God create all the different animals and plants and trees and nothing is exactly alike? Why would He fashion each of us uniquely with different features and temperments and abilities?
Someone who doesn't care would never take the time to put into us what God has put into us. And even though there are billions of us on the planet, not one of us is exactly like the other. God specializes in uniqueness and individuality.
Have you ever done a project and just kind of slapped stuff together and did what you had to do to complete it? You really knew it wasn't your best. Now, have you ever worked on something you really enjoyed? You took all the time you needed in order to do it right and make sure it was awesome because you cared.
That's what God has done with us. He wants fellowship with us, His creation. He gives us the chance to get to know Him out of His uncomprehending love.

Is there anything in your life that you love so much that you would sacrifice what you love most to save it?

To me that is why God cares.

We don't see all things as God does and it is good to be aware of our own nothingness.....yet if we really understood how priceless we all are then we would not deny God. We deny ourselves when we deny Him. We are His offspring to become like Him.....He will always be our Father and our God...just like your parents will always be your parents but some day you too may have children...this life is a test for us to know what we are made of...God already knows us....but gives us freedom to choose between right and wrong....how we manage this life is a mirror of how we would manage in eternity....so those only worthy of such responsibility will continue to have this privilege. God wants us to have it all....that is why he cares.

This is what I feel to be true.

The answer from the bible is that God created us special out of his own image. He did not want mind numbed robots that were required to serve Him, He found glory in being chosen.
HE says his wish is that all would be saved and his grace is sufficient to save every one. But only efficient for those who chose Him.

It is a BAD (pathetic, actually) parent that will abandon his child.

God is a good parent. A good parent cares about each child.

I have more than one child, and I love each of them. It doesn't matter how many there are. They are mine. The same holds true for God.

It doesn't matter how many there are. That is an argument based on human finiteness. God is beyond our understanding, so to say that he cannot hear or does not care just because there are more than one of us simply makes no sense in God's economy.

"Similarly, god has the ability to exert control, punish the guilty, protect the innocent etc. "

Yeah, right. He seems to have fallen down on the job.
