Epiphone makes some nice guitars for the money. They're not overly expensive and they sound good. Ibanez, too.
Just make sure that whatever guitar you buy has fairly low action ( gap between the strings and fretboard when you look at it from the side). High action makes it harder to depress the strings. And that can be frustrating, especially for a beginner.

I played a Brunswick guitar in a music shop the other day (UK). I was very pleasantly surprised. Nice tone, good sound, inexpensive. Could be worth looking at (Steel Strings). If you're a total beginner, u might want to look at nylon strings - thetyre kinder on the fingers when U start. It'll hurt either way! Hope this helps.

Alvarez makes good beginner and professional acoustic guitars ranging from $300 to $900 or so.
