I think this is a question which was appropriate for an earlier age, but not now. It has been said that the average person will go through 6-8 different careers (not just jobs) in a lifetime, so the world in which my father spent 50+ years working for the same employer is over.

What is important, however, is to decide upon your values relatively early. They provide some guidelines as to the other choices you make in life. For example, if you are strongly health-focused, you won't choose to do something which will harm others' health. If you think family should always come first, you will probably choose a career which will not detract from raising a family (something which will not require you to work 100-hour weeks outside the home, for example).

There is no "correct goal". I didn't decide what I wanted to do with my life until after my third year of college, usless credits, and most importantly wasted money. People change throughout their life and with that people obtain new career goals. I recommend the book, "What should I do with my life?" I'm totally against self-help books but my Mom bought it for me as I was struggling on what to do with my life. The book contains personal experiences from Doctors who became store clerks and Lawyers who became a taxi cab driver.

Some are lucky and know their knack at a very young age and for the rest of us, it takes time; a lifetime.

There simply isn't one!

And it is a well known fact that a good 70% of people will alter half way through life!

Example: Me!
Trained nurse....wanted to do it all my life....since I was 10.
by 22 I was a qualified nurse.

Then life sent me a challenge....a disabled child.

Left nursing and stewed for several years. Then decided to become involved in charity for disability that child suffered from. Became the Manager and Project Leader of the Organisation with no formal managerial qualifications. I thought I had best rectify it and so went back to college at 40!

Graduated last year!

If it is the truel goal of one's life, there should be indications of it throughout childhood. It would be the subject or activity that the individual never tired from, no matter how involved they became.
If they are not aware of such a thing, have them talk to their family or parents, or friends... you'd be surprised to learn how perceptive other people can be.
If you're speaking for yourself, I can only say if you do not know what you wish to do for a career yet, now is the time to start getting involved and learning and testing the waters. unfortunately, oftentimes people don't realize what they really want to do until they have experiences that show them what they don't want to!

I wasted 7 years of my life after high school. I wouldn't advise that to anyone. The sooner the better!

I don't think there is any particular age to decide your goal.

When you start believing in yourself, start looking everywhere for options. Work hard and you will find options coming your way.

Keep consulting your parents and your seniors for opinions.

All the Best

when you can't be supported by your parents anymore. 18 to 24. then you are on your own, i'm including college so you can graduate and be on your own. i'm being generous. you can change occupations as many times as you want, but after 24, make it on your own.
