I see the Nissan Sentra is pretty cheap. I can pick up a used one with recent year and relatively low mileage for around 4K. But are they reliable as some of the other imports. Also I was told Nissans use cheaper interior materials.

Both are great, reliable makes. I've had a Nissan for 20 years now and it's never had any problems, except for a clutch replacement. The Toyota we own is also trouble free. As far as the interior, I like the Toyota better...It's up to you and your personal taste in design and style and cash flow!

Toyota Corrola or Nissan Sentra are just about the same. I personally think the Nissan is a little better looking on the out side. And motor performance is better, Gas mileage is about the same. Sentra GXE has most all you want in basic transportation CD player with mp-3 input electric windows power key less entry and alloy wheels. 60 40 fold down seats and the special edition 2005 has Rockford Fosgate 250 watt system. The reason they are less money now the new body style model has been out 2007 car is much better in many ways. With 2008's arriving at dealers near you. Old sentra got 30 mpg the new one gets 36 mpg and the CVT transmission or base 6 speed vs the old sentra 5 speed. Toyota Just has the reputation of quality that they fight hard to keep. Nissan recently hired lots of toyota brand managers to build quality into the Nissan brand. Follow the example of the largest car producer in the world... WHY NOT!

I own a 2006 Nissan Sentra 1.8. So far it's been very reliable and great on gas. I bought mine brand new & and now has 18K miles. On the negative side it's not going to thrill you, and doesn't really handle all that great. Driving the Sentra through a storm, rain, and wind, you have to really take it easy, due to the cars weight, and poor aerodymics. It's not meant to win a race, but it will give you a guanatee on starting each morning, and cheap to run and insure. The best one to go with is the 1.8S. I wish I had chose it, you get cruise, power locks, windows, leather wrap wheel & 6 CD changer. I went with the stock plain jane. The S model is typically only $800.00 more. The automatic trans used by Nissan shift smoothly, and doesn't have that annoying downshirt sydrom everytime you go up a little grade. So yes, I recommend Sentra, But remember the pros & cons I mentioned. Good Luck and have fun.

Nissan has been cheapening their cars since around 1991. The pre '91 cars are on par with the Toyotas and hondas of their day. Not anymore. There has been quality issues with Sentras since around 2000 model year. i would spend a little more for a Corolla or Camry. The Mazda Protege is better alternative if the Corolla and Civic are too much money. The Protege's only flaw is that Mazda never really advertised it. Still it's as reliable as the Corolla and Civic.

First off, any car at 200,000 miles is gonna start falling apart. That's a given.

I haven't driven a Toyota, but I DO have a 98 Nissan Sentra GXE that is wonderful and NOT falling apart on the inside. Mine has 107K on it right now and works great. I just had the struts and coils in front replaced, but I live in a bumpy area with many, many, many potholes, so I expected it (and put it off for too long). I've never had any battery, alternator, or exhaust problems that are common with many cars. Never had any leaks, and have owned the car for 6 years.

If you can get one for 4K with lower mileage, I'd go for it. Gas is cheap-er, maintenance is cheap (tires, wipers, lights, amount of oil, etc), and under the hood is well organized with relatively easy access in the event you do have a problem. Only thing I can't do is change my headlights because I'm not strong enough and those suckers are in TIGHT!

Good luck!

In my 25 years as a mechanic, I see any brand of Japenese car is a quality unit. On the nissan the interior may be inferior, but as long as it is realible, who cares about the trim. Yes Toyota will be better finished. Toyota can afford to make for you a very well made car. They have something like $40billion sitting in the bank so they don't have to ( and will not! ) cut corners in making you a very well made car. They are so succesfull because people that own them love the quality and relabilty and buy them again and again and spread the word about them. Thats why Toyota resale value is so good.

Sentras are cheaper made cars. I sold my 91 sentra at 200,00km because it was fallign apart. It also needed the muffle replaced every year pretty much. Not the greatest cars. Id say go with a Chevrolet cobalt/cavalier(very reasonably priced), or a toyota.

Sentras are just fine, my friend has 2, both are falling apart , pre 1995, automatics, almost 200,000 miles, the transmission still shifts smooth and engine runs good.

Dont get a 2000 and up, they had headgasket problems.
