Mom's can be suprisingly understanding. Unless he's a woman beater, drug addict or something else extreme that might make her angry, I say tell her.
But you might want to think about a relationship when you aren't comfortable telling people about it in the first place.
But then again, I don't know how old you are. So, I am basing this on the thought that you are old enough to be dating in the first place.

Moms are wise, but it sounds like you know their is a problem. Talk to her but ask her why she is flipping out, calmly. Ask her to really explain. Really let her know you are listening, and say mom I want to just be able to talk to you and I realize I am young want to make good decisions. Then let her know why he is a friend that you just like. Don't say its a huge crush, just that its natural now to like boys, but not go overboard or anything. Movies, parties, sports events, that stuff, even hanging out here at home. He should be age appropriate though. Theres a reason older boys try out younger girls cause they can't get the attention of girls their age/ cause theres a problem---ususally their dumb or fast.

I guess it depends on why she will flip out. Either its your age, or the type of guy it is. Either way you don't want to be holding out, or she might think you were lying to her

I found you can keep safe by keeping people on a "need to know" basis. Only tell people what they need to know. If they don't need to know, then you don't need to tell them. Doing otherwise can open up a whole can of worms.

Always better to tell her than her find out by accident. Then she'll be even more angry. And trust me, moms ALWAYS find out.
