I think there great dogs when they've been raised right. Not to be used as a fighting dog but as a family pet. I had a pit bull and he acted just like my lab. Both are loving, gentle, and not violent. Any dog can bit a person or turn on one all dogs have different breaking points just like people. I hate the fact that pit bulls have a bad rep because people train them to fight or attack. They are very good dogs. I think they might be more protective IE someone breaks in to your house or attacks you on the street but in some ways that's a good thing. Your not going to have your dog taken away if someone breaks in and your dog protects you and your family. My pit bull never showed any signs of aggression to my family, friends, strangers or other dogs. He was a big baby. I also have friends who own pit bulls and their dogs are the same way. By the way my daughter was a baby when we had our pit bull. When we brought her home he except her better that our lab. Our lab was really jealous but our pit bull loved her and touched her with the up most gentleness.

I have owned three pits and I absolutely love them. They are very loyal, friendly, and playful. Most of them think of themselves as no different than a lap dog. The two that I had around the time my son was born were better parents to him than his mother and me.

Are you thinking about buying one?
If so, I recommend first and foremost that you find a reputable breeder. There has been such an insurgance in this country with the popularity of this breed that there is a a large amount of poor breeding going on.

Do you have the time to devote to a dog that can be a huge handful?
Pitbull puppies can be a living nightmare. They are very smart dogs who get bored very easily. They will find and/or create something to do if you pay no attention to them.

Be sure to read some dog training material or take your puppy to a trainer soon after you get him/her.

Be sure to invest in a solid built dog crate and go about crate training.

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG OUT ALONE WHEN YOU ARE NOT HOME!

I think they are the greatest! I have an APBT and she is the sweetest dog I have ever had. I
am no spring chicken. Over the last 60+ years I had many dogs.
My Pit now is 4 years old. I have two other dogs, a 4 1/2 year old Beagle and a 9 year old Chi/Terrier mix. They all get along great. The do seem to play a bit rough, but none has ever been hurt. The Pit and Beagle will run through the house biting ears and legs and the Terrier will run behind them barking, pretty funny.
I have never done any major training with any of them, they are house trained. I just made them house dogs, got a doggy door and let them sleep with me. They are a bit ill mannered. They like to jump on anyone who comes into the house. None of them have never jumped on children. I trust the Pit around kids more than any other dog I have ever had. I have seen her lay, for hours, right next to my one month grandson. It was like she was saying, "You don't have to worry about him". Must be why Pits are referred to as the "Nanny Dog".
I will admit that when my grandson brought her home I was not sure it was a good idea. It did not take long for me to understand what a great dog a Pit is.
I guess I got a bit long winded, but Pits are great!

Fisrt, I guess it depends why you are asking. In my opinion the only way a pitbull should be raised as with one person that will be it's caregiver for LIFE. Most of the breeds that are considered pitbulls(there are more than one "pitbull" is a blanket term not ONE particular breed) are one person animals, which is why they are very hard to place when put up in a shelter. As well as why they are often prone to turn on people. I also however belive that ANY breed can be taught to fight therefore not ALL pits are bad. It all depends on how they are raised.

If you mean APBT's, they are excellent family and working dogs. Generally great with kids too. They get a bad rap due to the exaggeration and lies of the media. It makes some people hate and fear them, even though they have no real experience of their own. APBT's were gamebred, so they should not be %100 trusted with other dogs or animals, but animal aggression is completely different than human agression. Overall though they are very loyal to their families, and big people pleasers, as well as extremely intellegent and athletic. I adore the breed.

I believe all dogs have the capability to bite and attack. Pit bulls are just one breed that have a bad reputation. i know many pit bulls that are the sweetest dogs and i know many other dogs that have a fantastic reputation as a breed on the whole but are quite nasty. Its the way the dog is brought up. Socialisation at a young age is critically important. No dog should be trusted with small children ever. All they need is one bad day and the damage is done. i think pit bulls make excellent pets if treated with the respect that they require.

I have a APBT (pit bull), GREAT dog ,she is sweet, loving, loyal, and friendly. A big part of my family!
However not just anyone needs such a strong breed of dog.
They need to be socialized, trained and exercised (daily).
They get a bad rep because of BAD owners neglecting them & abusing them.
But if you treat them right you'll end up with a friend !

i think that they just need to be owned by people who know dogs, and not some teenager trying to look tough. im against the breeding of all dogs, there are so many homeless dogs out there in need that it just seems like vanity to require a certain breed. you can find wonderful characteristics in mix breeds of all types

If a dog is breed for fighting as its main strengh, then why any would want a fighting dog as a pet is beyond me. Like a kelpie is a working dog, so makes a bad pet unles it is strenuously exercised regularly, a lab is placid by nature so makes a good dog for seeing eye dog, etc. So, unless you participate in the "sport of dog fighting" I see no good reason for pit bulls to even exist.

Sad to say, I think they are unpredictable. They are fine until they are not.
