A Marine's view of Iraq
Published April 8, 2007
My son, Dan, is a Marine serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. I just got off the phone with him. He asked me if "they" were trying to pull us out of Iraq.
I told him the Democrats in the House and Senate were trying to set a pull-out date.
My son made two statements which gave me pause.
He said, "If they pull us out, the good we've done here will be lost instantly.
"The stuff going on over here will follow us home if we get pulled out."
To hear a Marine corporal tell me that good things are happening in Iraq gave me hope and to think the evil people who orchestrated the 9/11 attacks would attack on American soil again made my heart lurch.
Our military needs to be allowed to do their job and finish their mission. Remember, we're not fighting Iraqis. We're fighting terrorists in Iraq. If not there, where?

I totally agree with this. I came back from Iraq in Jan. I spent a year there as a military advisor to the Iraqi Army in Fallujah. There is a lot of good going on over there but the media doesn't publish it because that isn't what sells. Why would the American people want to hear about successful recruiting drive when they can hear about suicide bombings? I was personnaly involved in 5 Iraqi Army recruiting drives which recruited over 1000 men without any incidents or terrorist attacks. The news didn't report that.
If we pull out now then all that hard work, the work that many military men and woemn died for, will be wasted. We need to see this through. Let us do our job. A pull out timeline will only give the terrorist the power. All they will need to do is wait until that deadline. IT give them a goal to work to. It doesn't help us.

Sounds like the soldier might be a little confused about the Iraq war's original objective.
1) We didn't go to Iraq to fight terrorism.
2) We didn't go to Iraq to make life better for the Iraqi people.
We SUPPOSEDLY went to Iraq to capture and detain Saddam Hussein and his WMDs.
The war in Iraq is unjust and a complete farce. The real war on terror is not in Iraq but in Afghanistan/Pakistan region. Osama bin Laden attacked us on 9/11 not Saddam Hussein. How easily we forget.

That's pretty heavy stuff. It's sad that our soldiers are in the middle of such a heated issue where the country is divided when they are just trying to do a job so they can pay for college, support their families or serve their country. Could be possible they are being fed a little propaganda, or they are obviously there and see the results of the deployment. I'm on the fence on this issue because I don't think we are privy to a lot of important information.

My goodness Cantcu, you're the poster child of why reading comprehension training in school is so important.
The thought reads "Remember, we're not fighting Iraqis. We're fighting terrorists in Iraq." You took it out of context to say that we're killing Iraqis. Some people only see what they want to see, and it's disgusting. But, I digress.
Anyway, I loved that blog and couldn't agree more. Thanks for sharing it with us.

There needs to be a time table set regardless, I do agree that we can't just pull out totally but need to understand and set goals and targets and meet those deliverables. We just can't go on forever and this administration has done a horrible job managing what we are doing... we have not done a good managerial job with this war and thus putting a time table will help us focus and get our objective complete faster then later.

I got down to the good we are doing, and then became sick!
Killing Iraqi's is good? Really!!
Most Iraqis hate us, much of the Middle East hate us, We kill civilians with our dumb bombs, we rape and murder families and we attacked a country that had nothing to do with terrorist or 9/11!
We should not even be there, and I would like to know why we are? Moping up a Bush war isn't going to cut it.
There is no military victory to be had in Iraq. It's like tossing money down a big corporate hole!
There were no terrorist in Iraq until we let them in, now we are in a sectarian CIVIL war. They are obviously getting help from others. WE ARE NOT FIGHTING TERRORISTS, we are killing Iraqi's: 30,000 since Jan 1, 2006.
All we are doing is making enemies, some you will probably see at some point!
Please don'r start the American soil routine! It is getting old, and it isn't true!
When we start fighting terrorist, let me know!
Excuse me. This is what it said "Remember, we're not fighting Iraqis. We're fighting terrorists in Iraq" which is not true. We are fighting Iraqi's, and they are getting killed every single day!
