Hmm.. I seem to be going against the grain here but I prefer the old ones.
1) There must be a reason why you see soooo many air cooled ones driving around despite the fact that they are about 50 years old. Maybe they just keep running if maintained..(retorical question)?
2) Plenty of parts available and they are easy to work on. Heck the WHOLE engine can be dropped by two people in less then 30 minutes with a few tools and a beer apiece. A little longer to put it back
3) Yeah, they are not as safe as the new ones and don't have all the bells and whistles, but you don't get them to live in, you buy them to drive from there to there. If you want to watch TV or keep your beer cold, get an SUV or a trailer.
4) NOBODY fails to smile at a beetle when it chugs buy
but if you are trying to decide in order to buy one.. ultimately the choice is yours.

Depends totally what you're doing with it.
I would only get an old bug for 2 things: as a project car, as they're really easy to work on, and as a Sunday driver after the project has been completed.
With the New Beetle, you can get either a TDI which is a great MPG value, or a 2.0L (2.5 now) which is a tried-and-true gas engine, or a 1.8turbo that's very sporty and powerful.
All of these new bugs come loaded, modern, and comfy.
They even have a heater! ;)
That said, they still carry the character and peace connotations of the old beetles, in a modernized packaging.
Not as easy to work on, though. As most modern cars, there is precious little room under the hood to maneuver your tools.

The old ones are basic, but:
1) hardier,
2) simpler, easier and cheaper to repair & maintain,
3) have nicer styling.
4) if maintained well, will last far longer than the new Bug.
The new ones:
1) have all the comforts & options,
2) are safer,
3) more expensive to maintain,
4) I heard, have some electrical problems.
I bought a 1972 Beetle 1302S (Super Beetle), 8 months ago, and do not regret doing so.
A well-maintained old (Classic) Bug will last forever, but I doubt very much that the new one would.
It really is up to you, and your individual taste and lifestyle.
I hope that the above would assist you in some way to make a decision.

its up too your taste.. i see mean old school bugs, problems with new and old bugs is usually the electrical.. i dont know why they have so much problem with electrical stuff.. but thats what im experiencing.. The old one can do more, more performance parts out there, the new bugs its just gettin up up and up.. If you like classis then old bugs, if like new one then yah.. i like new ones better, can trigger problems right away n stuff... thats just me..
