In my view what's being said here goes far beyond the cliche "think for yourself."
This passage alludes very concisely to the fact that our entire view of the world and of ourselves is conditioned by our education, by our immersion in "the pattern of this world." We are conditioned by the world, and we condition the world in the sense that our minds impose their patterns on our perceptions of the world.
To break free of this conditioning and become a truly independent being requires a renewal on the order of a complete spiritual transformation. It means a deep recognition of the way our minds distort our reality and a leap to a higher order of awareness where this mechanism becomes transparent.

The quote is from the Bible in the book of Romans. Romans 12:2 "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
This quote describes what Christians are to do with regards to their behavior and means that they do not love the things of this world and that they no longer try to fit in and compromise their beliefs.

I don't think the Historical Buddha actually said that (i doubt you could name the scriptural text), but it does ring true. Buddhism is not that logical an animal, not everything applies in every instance. If you truly were freed, maybe you would not need to ask directions? (You could tell from the stars, or from some kind of foresight. You may just have thought to bring a map & compass...) To ask for directions IS really being independent in terms of being a grown up. You do not have to ask anyone whether asking directions is the right thing to do. ; ) Good Question, though friend, and thanks for the quote! : ) Best Wishes, Goodfella XX

I am reminded of the book "The Road Less Travelled": the quote is an advice, asking you to be original in your thoughts and style of functioning, be independent and enjoy the intellectual freedom that you get from not copying others, by not listening to others too much all the time! Set the trend!

It means do not just flow with the :tide" of life. It is very easy to be a conformist, but the more successful people are those who create their own ideas and dared to be different. Do not be afraid to follow your own mind and pursue your own dreams. It is only when you dare to do something about the things that you dream for - no matter how different they are - that you will be able to achieve success and happiness.

To me it sounds like to be your own person, look around and make your own decisions rather than listening to society, maybe even try new things in life.
It could also mean to always be thinking and keep an open mind to things and ideas, rather than immediately closing your mind without even considering the thoughts of others, whether you just listen only to hear their views or actually consider them when it comes to your opinions.

Don't allow other people to shape what you think, create your own thoughts.

be leader, not a follower, and don't allow media to brainwash you into being something that you are not.
