and right before they discussed the violence of the bible, it said "due to the graphic nature of this progam, viewer discretion is advised"

yet, we allow children to read the bible?

I guess it's worse somehow to see the violence than to just read about it. When I was a kid, about 11 or so, I read the prologue of Kujo. My mom had to tear the closet out of my room from the nightmares I had. No kidding. I had a real overactive imagination. Most kids do.

I don't understand the logic behind teaching a kid about hell and damnation anyway. It's a cruddy parenting tool.

Oooh! Cool!

I know that violence is part of human nature. Violence also turns me off big time, that's why I don't have a teevee. Maybe it's also why I haven't read the bible all the way through and only look for pertinent texts for reference.

No reason children shouldn't read the bible, old and new testaments. I've seen very few kids that have remembered much of it.

At the same time I have met kids as young as 10 to 12 who are memorizing the Koran in religious school. This is part of their education and it turns out most of the stories they know are prayers for peace, and they enjoy it. Same goes for the Bible and the Torah, most school children eat up the stories. I know some tales are of wars and hatred, but violence is not the end result. (Weirdos don't count!)

I imagine as far as the program you watch goes they just use that warning to placate the FCC in case someone is offended by an ugly phrase or depiction of beheading or the like. That and it attracts more viewers.....

Life is good, share it and smile!

We also allow Children to watch TV. Violence is a part of human life sad but true. How can people learn if they stick their heads in the sand. Part of being a parent is trying to guide children in life so that when they get on their own they make wise choices. If they don't see the consequences of bad actions what is the incentive to keep them from the wrong path? Yes there is violence in the Bible but there is also a lesson to learn from it so we don't have to learn it the hard way first hand.

History is full of violence and much of the Bible catalogs that fact.
People allow their kids to sit in front of the tv and watch all kinds of violent movies, cartoons and shows. They button mash their controllers to the latest and "cool" gratuitously violent video games and nobody seems to blink an eye. Add the internet, magazines and the latest comic books to that list. But talk about the Bible and people want to ban it.
The only life-changing message anyone will hear from any of the media listed above is from the Bible.

Because reading it is one thing, but seeing it enacted by actors is quite another. I've been buying History Channel DVDs, and like them very much, but they do get bloody at times. History is bloody, you know.

Small children need to be protected from nightmare-causing levels of violent images. They don't really understand the reality of it enough to have nightmares (usually) when you just read them a story, or use flannel-board figures (or the 21st century equivalent) to illustrate them.

If more kids actually read those parts of the bible, I'm pretty sure there would be a whole lot less Christians and Jews in the world. I'm quite sure that most parents either haven't read those parts themselves, or censor them from their children.

Wow, I started to read the Bible to my children and I realized I had to stop. They were too young and so much unambiguous bigotry and illogic. I had to move to the New Testament.

They have to put that on there. Because people are sue happy and if they find anything offensive they will sue. Its to protect them!
Life is violent! The Bible is life and people back then act no different thant today. They sinned back then too. Doesn't mean God is violent.
