i am going to be 21 in two months. I am both excited and intimidated about going to a bar. i don't know how to order a drink or what to order. Can someone please tell me of what to do at a bar so i don't look like a fish fresh out of water?

Well I'm assuming you are a girl but there are several choices. Depends if you want fruity or not, if you want to get drunk or not, and how much $$$ you want to spend.
Here are a few to try:
Sex on the Beach
Long Island Ice Tea
Pina Colada
Strawberry Daquiri
Any Martini
Tom Collins
White Russian
Moose Milk
Planters Punch
Margarita
Tequila Sunset
Black Russian
Bloody Mary
Kamikaze
Sea Breeze
Jack and Coke
Mimosa
Any Beer

Just look some of these up...
To order just go up to the bar and ask for whatever drink you want. But if this is your first time drinking....stay away from the tequilla lol.

Sushi.
A pint of your favorite brew. Tell the bartender/barmaid it's your birthday, they may have some recommendations. You can go to the side of the bar, and whisper this, so you aren't announcing in the middle of a crowd.
When you order your first drink, be sure you have the money in hand and give a good tip. You don't have to tip great after each drink, make the first special. They'll appreciate this. If you want to celebrate, stay with the brew. Drink an imported brand, or the local favorite.
A few mixed drinks, and your head may spin, and you can't stand up, and will feel like a fool. Don't ruin your birthday. Plan on some Chinese food, something light. Coat your stomach with milk earlier. Have a good time.
Don't get sloshed. If you want to get sloshed, stay home where if you fall down, no one knows but you and your neighbor below. If you live with your parents, do this at a friends house, and get pizza or some food, to go with the hard liquor. Don't drink too many shots on your birthday, it may seem cool, although I've never felt sober after two.
Drink some champagne or wine, although most bars don't have champagne on hand.
Rum and Coca Cola is nice, if you drink it slow. It's smooth and isn't thick like whiskey where you'll want to lie down.
Drink responsibly, and get a designated driver, or a safe escort home.
Oysters.

Just remember to give a little detail when ordering, Don't say I will take a beer, say I will take a bud light, or a miller light, or whatever you drink. Also be prepared for questions like on the rocks, which means with Ice. When ever ordering a drink, be prepared to tell them what brand of liquor you will want in it. There is usually a top shelf and a bottom shelf liquor. The bottom shelf is the cheaper of the 2. If you don't know the answer to the question, don't be afraid to ask the bar tender, They work for tips, so they are normally very friendly and will usually help you decide on a drink if you don't know what you want. I hope this helps.

ok here's the deal:
never order a martini at a sports bar.
Never order a white zinfandel NO MATTER WHAT!
never order a beer at a 5-star restaurant unless you're having their $30 burger.

Just consider where you are and go with the flow.
If you're trying to impress a girl throw out the straw!
There's nothing like watching a guy trying to flirt with a girl while he's fishing for his straw with his tongue.

Somethings are an acquired taste like wines and gin and tonics, separate, of course. Oh and if you want to avoid hang overs don't mix wine with hard liquor or beer with wine etc. If it's too late though, have 2 aspirin and a bottle of water right by your bedside ready to take before you hit the sack. Have fun!

Depending on what time, what kind of bar, etc. you decide to indulge your first legal venture at, here's a few guidelines:

If it's Happy Hour, order a Long Island Ice Tea (it is a subtle way to get alot of alchohol in one drink, kinda cheap and not look like a ROOKIE!!) If you are with a group of people, order apps and pace yourself--DRAFT BEER or a cute girlie version: smirnoff ice (now available in assorted flavors)! If you are heading out late, need to pack a whallop in one or two drinks--BLACK RUSSIAN or if you can't hang with that WHITE RUSSIAN! If you order a margarita at any point, act cool and order a "cadillac on the rocks" it looks like you truly appreciate and developed a taste for a drink; not a smoothie!! Happy Birthday 2U!!

You go up to the bar and stand by the counter. Depending how busy it is, the bartender may come right up to you are you may have to wait. You tell the bartender what you'd like (e.g. type of beer, a shot, type of mixed drink etc.). They'll bring it to you. Depending on the type of bar, you will usually pay right there. Some people tip with each drink (25 cents to $1, others don't tip or tip at the end of the night)..

Beer. It is easy. Ask for whatever is on draft. It is what everybody drinks.

If you want a mixed drink, that is where individual preferences come in. Find what you like. You might want to start with something sweet. Whisky sour is my favorite. I am not going to recommend any more intricate drinks because the cheap bars I go to don't make anything more complicate than a whisky sour.

An Amaretto Stone Sour is always excellent. I have recently begun to experiment with new tastes and found an excellent drink. You have to first ask if they have banana liquor. If they do, tell them you want a drink with banana liquor, Bailey's, and cream (milk or half&half) on ice. It is awesome!

If you like strawberries, go for the Strawberry Margarita with sugar on the glass rim. Yum!

Remember, you are at a BAR... relax and be yourself. There aren't any wrongs or rights. Just be on your toes, there are a lot of creeps out there!

Congrats! Think about what you like to eat. Sweet food? Sour food? Get a drink that matches your taste. Tell the bartender and then tell them it's your 21st birthday and what kind of drink you would like, he or she will have a good idea what to get you and you might get a special birthday price on your first drink! Do NOT do 21 shots for your 21st birthday, that's just stupid.

Start off easy with a standard cocktail, like gin and tonic, screwdriver, mojito, long island iced tea, etc. With experience, you'll be able to order more exotic drinks. Happy Birthday.
