Adam and Eve didn't get punished for getting smarter, they got punished for disobeying God's one and only command at that time.
When you write a story, you have to focus on the HIGHLIGHTS and you don't include ALL the details. I believe Adam and Eve had many children before Seth was born, we just get the main events of what happend, with Cain and Abel.
"After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters."

You read it because within it is the truth. The enemy will set up many stumbling blocks to knock you down but you have to get back up and go on. Do not let a seed of doubt be planted within your mind because it will grow and eventually choke out the truth and going through this cycle will be tiresome and fruitless. Keep your head high, ask questions from the heart and not the head and "believe" that the true answers will be given to you!!

Satan as the serpent is symbolic.
(Revelation 12:7-9) And war broke out in heaven: Mi′cha·el and his angels battled with the dragon, and the dragon and its angels battled 8 but it did not prevail, neither was a place found for them any longer in heaven. 9 So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him.
The Great Dragon is Satan. The original serpent. Genesis ch. 3

I think that the Garden is a metaphor for the easier "hunter-gatherer" lifestyle in which humans gathered fruits and hunted game. Therefore, the expulsion from the garden referred to the neolithic revolution (ca. 8,000 B.C), in which man had to work harder for food through farming and domesticating animals.
Animal and Plant domestication (Gen. 4:2-4)
Musical instruments and tools (Gen. 4:21-22)

Read the OT as a book of stories to convey deep truth. Like fairy-tales. Fairy-tales have an important purpose, they are not entertainment. If you want facts and logic just read the NT.
