My best friend is a first generation American; his father was from Serbia. My friend follows the Orthodox faith, and we talk about it sometimes, and I participated in his wedding at start of the new year and was fascinated! One thing that intrigues me however, is the apparent dichotomy that seems apparent with a large number of followers. There seems to be a sort of overt, social conservatism paired with a covert earthy, agrarianism – almost hippy-ish if you will. It seems so yin-yang and so contrary, I often wonder if there isn’t some dynamic secret I’ve been missing all this time. Can someone please fill me in?

Most of the people who attend his church are younger Americans, and most are converts. However, I'm not sure if there is that much influence from the older folks or those who are not unlike his father i.e. from the "old country." No, I'm not from California; I guess I just sense something there that is aquired or accepted within the faith that seems deeper and more genuine vice the thin gloss of the more commercialized, 'retail' mega-churches that take over my television every sunday at 6 a.m.

I am not sure that loving and caring for God's creation is a vice.

God wants us to be good caretakers or stewards of his gift to mankind the earth.

Some people like the return to the "simple life". The Amish as a whole have been doing this since immigrating.

I am not sure I understand what you are saying here. Most Orthodox come from the 'old country' and have some ways of the old cultures. And they are more conservative and down to earth. Nothing odd about that. Do you live in California or something?
