How about feigning deafness...they scream louder and you keep on sayin' "Huh??? What did you say?...." while acting like you are trying to read their lips...eventually they will just give up...

Between myself and another or between two other people?

Myself and another: Listen to them, make sure I understand what they are saying...and either agree or agree to disagree respectfully.

Between two others: Usually have them talk to me one at a time so I can get a full understanding of what they feel. Then, I can go back to each one with an explanation of what the other person feels. In the end run though, I usually have to simply say...you can agree to disagree...but must be respectful. Part of my job.

Telling them this:

If God wants something from me, he would tell me. He wouldn't leave someone else to do this, as if an infinite being were short on time. And he would certainly not leave fallible, sinful humans to deliver an endless plethora of confused and contradictory messages. God would deliver the message himself, directly, to each and every one of us, and with such clarity as the most brilliant being in the universe could accomplish. We would all hear him out and shout "Eureka!" So obvious and well-demonstrated would his message be. It would be spoken to each of us in exactly those terms we would understand. And we would all agree on what that message was. Even if we rejected it, we would all at least admit to each other, "Yes, that's what this God fellow told me."

find the middle ground

even if it means disregarding what was being fought over and walking away

usually arguments lead to violence if unchecked

so getting both parties to understand other's perspective helps, even if using selfish motives as cause to see that both parties are doing things for self interest, every time

I usually try to get the person to evaluate what they are saying and present my reasoning based on the fallacy of their arguement versus the facts that face their reasoning and method of thinking.

Check the relevant reference book and then show the person the facts. If that fails kick their a**.

Mostly I let the person keep their ignorant opinion and I watch and smile when they fall down trying to use it. It's more fun that way.

Bombarding people with statistics and facts, then backing my stance up with logic, reason, and understanding. If that doesn't work, I just remind people:

You may not believe in Zeus, but he believes in you.

I never argue. Discussing personal opinions is another thing, but arguing to change a person's mind is futile.
