Curb stomp him and tell him to smarten the hell up. As you said, no witnesses, so he cant do anything either.
If you cant, im sure you have some big friends.
But if you feel strongly against this. Just talk to your boss. Get a hidden camera and place it somewhere if you need proof.

Who do you report to? Is there a department supervisor or manager?Tell them. If you're at a power plant, there is likely electronic surveillance around somewhere, and some of his tantrums may be caught on tape. Don't let it continue, because no job is worth having to put up with that. And unhappily, people who are in bully mode only get more violent over time.

Grow up. This is the most advanced answer you can find in good employment books. If you need the job, and are capable, grow up and learn your job better than the abuse. Someday you will advance to a job where you are glad you stuck the job out, because you'll have a good, complete resume, a better job and maybe better coworkers. Grow up and get the most from the job.
If it's at the point of a breakdown, and you need the job, get a voice=activated tape recorder. They aren't real expensive, make sure you get one which works well, and you are on your way.
Before you turn the tapes in to your supervisor, consult a lawyer, as there are a zillion ways to sue for this type of abuse, you could get a lot of money from the company, they have departments to do this, (maybe they'll transfer you with a promotion) and you do make good money now, although you'll have to put up with it, and document it for awhile. Knowing you are recorded, maybe your behavior will change enough, so things can be worked out.

If telling him up front that you are sick of it and you'll file a grievance if he doesn't cut it out does not work, file a grievance. Talk to HR, talk to your/his supervisor. If your organization is worth a damn, they'll investigate. People like that leave a trail of unhappy coworkers, subordinates and workplaces and various transgressions.
Do NOT threaten or get drawn into a physical altercation, unless it is strictly self defense. If that happens, defend yourself and immediately call the cops and file criminal charges for assault. If you have made previous complaints to HR or higher-ups, there should be a record that will support you.
If your company does a cover-up, denies any record of your complaints, refuses to support you in any way, or tries to fire you as a trouble-maker, they aren't worth working for and you have grounds for a lawsuit.
See the last sentence of paragraph 1. Your lawyer will find those records!

My step father did this. i would simply look him in the eye (as calm as I could be) and listen to him rant and rave. When the silence finally came I'd say (in my most sarcastic voice) "are you done?" and go back to whatever it was I was doing at the time. He'd just stomp off.
I always felt like "I won".
Be very careful of using his tactics. He is being unethical and unprofessional....don't you dare lower yourself to his level....and if you do....you do so at your peril...especially if he is more established at the work place.
Quietly and discreetly ask around. I'll bet he pulls this same crap with other folks. If he does...there are you witnesses and you can, en mass, approach your supervisor.
If none of this is suitable, try to see if you can figure out a pattern to his outbursts...around pay day? step children visit? allergies? full moon? and talk with him about it.
