this is my first time ever dissecting a cadaver. I never had a problem before, with pigs, frogs, cats, deer heart, sheep brain, etc... The last two labs I have had to leave after about an hour. My head starts to buzz, and then I realize I can't really hear what is going on around me and I start seeing spots. I've tried to control my breathing, pinch myself and chew gum... I am totally annoyed with myself! I am a strong willed independent person who prefers to be in control of myself...and this is beyond my control. I am very frustrated. Any tips would be helpful.

1] eat an hour or so before lab
2] pop a hard candy in your mouth before you start
3] if smell bothers you, try Vicks or peppermint oil dabbed under your nostrils
4] cover up the face, and say - 'it's a giant rat, he/she cheated on his wife/husband, he never paid his income tax, he made his children wear ugly shoes,he voted Democrat/Republican,
he never said 'excuse me' - whatever it takes to make you annoyed enough to be a little mad, so the adrenaline carries you through.
P.S. my first cadaver was only 21, and I had met him!

1. Could it be possible that you are allergic to formaldehyde?

2. Start thinking of the cadavers as only bodies, vessels, empty casings. The spirit of the person is gone (if you believe in that.) Try asking that the cadavers be placed face down for the first few times. It will wear off after a few times and you'll become more comfortable with it with every lab. Good luck!

these other answerers who suggest it is your time are not teachers and do not understand how schools work. It is NOT your time. The school has set up a block of classes back to back to give you more time in your studies. They *could* have set up your two classes non-consecutively but they did not for a reason. the *only* reason to do this was to give your teacher more control over his pacing. In effect the school has set up a two hour class. The teacher can choose how to divide up the time used. here is what you can do: go to your admin, ask to be transfered into a class that has their bio seperate from their lab because you wish to have your five minutes back. You will find: There are no classes set up this way and they will laugh at you. Yes. they are allowed to do it - in fact you probably will learn more. Wait till you get to college and your labs are another day - hard to remember what you learned .

Most likely, you will not pass out. Even if you pass out a few times, you will be alright, later on.

Good Luck !
