Has anyone ever heard a story in which a murderer, robber or rapist explained their actions by saying, "Oh, I'm an atheist, so I don't see any problem with what I did." Of course not. You don't have to be religious to have a moral code. But I keep reading responses on R&S that talk about how atheists just want to be able to do whatever they feel like doing. What I feel like doing is sleeping all day and then having some ice cream. But of course I get up, go to work, treat people around me with respect and call my mother regularly. Can anyone give me a serious response to this?

You know what's right and wrong without opening a bible. Be proud of who you are.

it takes some level of discipline to go from being a mindless robot for christ to a seemingly missionless atheist without a crusade in which to go kill and convert others

that phrase comes from those within the cults as they see grass being green and wish they could make own choice, follow own path but feel they are locked in a cage

alas! the cage door has always been open, just take a second look and see you have always been free but guilted into believing enslavement is 'god's will' and best for you

freedom and religion are incompatible and do not mix, religions tell you that your freedom is sacrificed to do their will and call it 'god'

Because people are afraid of what they don't understand. They're jealous that some people have the audacity to live life morally, not because they fear some Big Brother god, but because they choose to.

It's really remarkable that there are as many democracies as their are (even to the limited degree that they function), because most people don't like others to have choices or freedom. And we see that clearly in the way that religious people act towards atheists.

As an atheist, you define your own moral code. You are free to do whatever you can justify doing. A religious person doesnt have the freedom to define their own moral code. It is defined by God.

I read somewhere (can't remember) that, in prison, the population of atheists is around 3%. The rest are Christians or Muslims and a few straggling religions.

Hmmm...

It's because when people have religion it gives them also a set of morals and standards; a way to live.
They don't comprehend how or why an atheist would follow the laws and be a good person if they don't believe god is there and that there is a heaven and hell.

I would bet that the people saying that Atheists are immoral don't know any Atheists. If they know an immoral Atheist, it's just as well because I know many immoral Christians. Why do they have church in prison if Christians are so moral anyway? HMMMM.......

I seriously doubt that anyone is 100% atheist. If they were, why would anyone love? Do you realize what a pain in the heiney it is to love? All of the crap we have to go through to love? Why would anyone follow the rules of man if they didn't have some deep seeded sense of "something else"? Mankind follows rules because of the guiding Spirit inside of us all. If someone truly believed there was no God why would they bother going to work ....why not just steal what you need? I mean if there truly is no God there won't be any consequences other than jail if you get caught and even then so what? A true atheist would not follow biblical based laws such as the ones that are in place in America. Isn't following biblical based rules in itself an act of obedience to God? I mean, everyone knows the laws of America are based on biblical principles.

We dont need religion for moral guidence, Many of us learn all we need to know in pre school,, ie dont kick sand in peoples faces, share your toys, be nice to each other..I now live in a Budhist country,,, and people here are very nice..
Seem,s to me many christians treat religion as some sort of crutch..

Most people don't have a clue what they're talking about which is why there is so much trouble in the world. It's being run by a bunch of dumb a**es like Paris Hilton, Justin Timberlake, and Snoop Dogg. Stop paying so much attention to them and do something else, like answer a bunch of stupid questions.

I don't think that just because a person has chosen to be an atheist that he or she is immoral.

I think what the people you refer to are saying is that YOU determine which standards you wish to follow...whereas a Christian has those standard determined for him or her through the word of God.

For example, if an atheist wished to lay around all day and live off of somebody else and drink himself stupid every night and have sex with a different woman every night etc., he could do that without constraints if that is what he chose to do.

Christians can not. In order to be obedient to our God, we have to live within His constraints...even if we would rather do something else. It is still a choice....just for a different reason.
