It probably happens because when you step outside, you're breathing in pollen that you're allergic to. There's probably a psychosomatic reaction too, where, expecting to sneeze by stepping into the sun, you'll breath in heavier, and therefore breath in more pollen.

UPDATE: Looking into it further, it could be something called Photic sneezing reflex. Link provided below.

I actually sneeze when exposed to bright light as well, especially when I am indoors and then go out of doors or look into a bright light. And, we are not alone in being affected by this. It is estimated that 24% of the population are affected by this condition.

It is called "ACHOO", or autosomal-dominant compelling helio-opthalmic outburst. The cause is still unknown, but is believed to be nerves in the face and nasal passages sensitive to light photons.

Hope this helps. I had an intense interest in finding the cause of this as well, since I'm a third year medical student and all of my classmates thought I was crazy for sneezing due to light.

This is a type of allergy that only certain people have called photic sneezing. My brother and I have it; sometimes when I am about to sneeze I can't make it happen unless I look into the light (usually it needs to be sunlight and just yesterday I noticed my computer monitor helps). This is nothing to be concerned about, just be thankful that you are unique :)

Not just you, I get that too. Don't know why, though!

I hypothesize that it's because of a sudden influx of stimulation to the eyes. Your tear ducts are connected to your sinuses, so perhaps some sort of stimulation causes the sneezing, like if you pinch your nose, your eyes water.

I heard that some people sneeze when they look at bright light or sunlight. It is genetic. I'm not sure how... but my friend has the same reaction to it... he was saying "it is somehow genetically predisposed." But I don't think it means that you are allergic to bright light or sunlight.

*edit* hey... i just looked it up. "The Dirty Bubble" guy is right!
