Chances are, your dark underarms aren't caused by hyperpigmentation but result from a persistent buildup of dry skin, says Colorado dermatologist Richard Asarch, director of the Asarch Center for Dermatology and Laser. The unsightly dark spots are probably tons of dead skin cells trapped in microscopic "hills and valleys" on your skin. To rid yourself of this buildup, apply an OTC moisturizer with exfoliating lactic acid to damp skin morning and night. Try AmLactin 12% Moisturizing Creme, $12.99, or Stiefel LactiCare Lotion, $10.

If you don't see improvement after six weeks (or don't want to wait that long), ask your doctor for a prescription-strength skin-sloughing solution, like Retin-A, which should yield results in only two to three weeks.

never ever try to remove hair from your armpits by any other way except for WAXING bcoz the rest (esp creams) make them darker. Plus waxing even helps your skin looking smoother and whiter.

Dark patches of skin are caused by skin-to-skin friction. You can exfoliate with a loofa sponge to remove the dark patches, and use lotion or oil under your arms to reduce friction.

my cousins swear that arm & hammer deodorant(that one with the powerful arm logo on baking powder) whitens. i use it, it works fine as a deodorant but i don't see whitening.
there are creams you can buy that are supposed to whiten your skin. i bought 'skinwhite' in the philippines, dunno if they sell it in the states, for underarm. don't really use it though bc i never noticed a difference.
i just shave and resign myself that hairless armpits, while not being air-brush-magazine perfect, are good enough.

it may be a buildup of oil and deoderants. try getting a clarifying soap and start with that. deoderants build up on some skin types.

Put lemon juice on them. It really helps. My mom's friend does it and she has the whitest arm pits.
