In modern German there is a distinction between "mann(adult male)" and ;mensch (human being)". Old English was a Germanic tongue also.

"Wer""We'or" was the word for man (male) as Herr is in modern German, "Man", "Mon""Manne", from the common German root "man", to think ,the word for the being, it applied to both male and female.
