To have surround sound the surround speakers should be placed to either to the side or behind your seating positions.
I have two suggestions that may help resolve your problem.
One would be to turn off the surround or rear speakers and let the front three speakers handle all the sound. You won't miss any of the surround sound, but you are not getting that now.
My other suggestion would be to leave the rear speakers in front when not using them, and to put them in the rear when you are using the surround sound, and then put them back in front when not using the system.

There's no point in putting the rear speakers in the front. Perhaps you can run wires under the carpet or around and under the baseboards to correctly placed rear speakers. If it's completely impossible, perhaps your receiver can be told to play 3.1 instead of 5.1.

How many? But the main base in front , a few behind, about two on the sides, you want the sound to be everywhere!!!

Get the one or two speaker simulated surround system - available from KEF, Yamaha, ZVOX, Polk etc.
Also, you can get the wireless rear speakers.
