How precious to [or concerning] me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!

Psalm 139:17

It's just one of the verses in that chapter that I can't seem to understand the meaning of.

It means that we can be comforted knowing that God is continually aware of our needs, troubles, and suffering, and that he plans for our care, forgiveness, salvation, and sanctification. His thoughts for us are unfathomable and immeasurable. As the apostle Paul writes, "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.' ( I Corin. 2:9 )

How wonderful that you are reading God's Word. That deserves commendation, not many are left who really study the Bible with deep meditation.

Those thoughts, (Ps. 139:17) revealed in his written Word, are far higher than anything from humans, no matter how brilliant their ideas may seem.

Thinking about a baby’s development in the womb made David reflect on God’s wisdom. Thus, the psalmist exclaimed: “So, to me how precious your thoughts are! O God, how much does the grand sum of them amount to!” (Psalm 139:17) David cherished Jehovah God’s thoughts, and they are so numerous that he was impressed by “the grand sum of them.” If God’s thoughts are precious to us, we will be diligent students of the Scriptures. (1 Timothy 4:15, 16)
If you do this you will be able to resist the intrusion of bad thoughts and wrong desires.
Hope this helped.

The Psalmist loves God so much that every thought of His is precious to him - he obviously spent much time contemplating God and His ways. He is a person who wants to really know what God is thinking, and what God's will for us is. A good example for us to follow.

The Psalmist then comments on the omnipotence and all encompassing knowledge of God. When we sometimes question what God is going and why, it would do well to remember this. God is the only one who sees the entire big picture, and knows what is best for us, even more so than we ourselves do.

Are you serious? Well, just in case you are, it means that the person speaking finds the thoughts of God to be precious toward him/her and that God has lots of thoughts of this kind. That's because He loves us more than we can know, regardless of the nay-sayers. He watches over us while we sleep, knows every hair on our heads, wants us to have health and wisdom. He is quite good to us, even the ones who hate Him who are getting ready to give me the thumbs down but they shouldn't because they know deep down that what I'm saying is true. He'll still love you even if you never say yes to Him.
I just thought of that joke about the guy in the flood - a car came by to take him away and he didn't go, a boat came by to pick him up and he didn't go, a helicopter came by to pick him up and he didn't go. When he was dead and met God he wanted to know why God had let him die. God said He had sent three different ways for him to be saved and he didn't take any of them. It isn't really a joke at all.

From what I see in the Life application Bible, David is talking about how much God cared for him...and how much of God's thought went into him. He acknowledged that the number of thoughts concerning him were vast....meaning that he realized just how much God loved him.

You stopped too soon. Verse 18 reads " if I should count them , they are more in number than the sand. When I am awake I am still with thee." I love this scripture! Have you ever loved someone so much that you can't stop thinking about them? Well, multiply that and that is how the Lord thinks of us. He never slumbers and his mind is set on His children. When we awake, we are still on His mind. Do you give God half this attention? He deserves it and much more!

.
I think the psalmist is saying that God thoughts are specific to him. In other words, God communicated to that person or convienced that person that he knows him.

Psalms 139:1 “O Jehovah, you have searched through me, and you know [me].

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

It means the writer values the thoughts of God and that God's thoughts are so huge, so many, so overwhelming that no one can add them up and make a total.
