My 6 year old is on Adderall XR 30mg for some time now and it is not working and the doctor refuses to change to anything else. I know I need a new doctor but until then has ANYONE found a natural herbal remedy that may help in the mean time to get her off this adderall and on something that will put some sanity in her life and ours? Please help

I can empathize with how you feel.
My 5 year old was diagnosed with ADHD, and the Doctor immediately prescribed a similar mind-altering drug to Aderall - Dexamphetamine.

As a mother I was desperate to try anything that could potentially help my daughter, and yes, for a short time, her behavior was transformed - but the positive results didn't last..... I consulted another Psychiatrist, in the hope that there may be an effective, lasting alternative for my little girl. He explained stimulants lose their effectiveness over time,as the body becomes resistant to it's effects. He went on to say ,the only way to counteract this is to increase the dosage.

Already skeptical about the potential for harmful side-effects, I researched natural alternatives, and to this day my little girl is happy, healthy and stimulant free. I might add I have nothing against conventional medicine, however if other alternatives are just as effective, more reliable, consist ant, and chemical free, I see no need to put my child on powerful drugs.

OMEGA-3 FISH OIL supplements affect brain function and have worked wonders. They are scientifically pr oven in several studies, to reduce the symptoms of ADHD, and ADD. I'd encourage you to find some detailed information about this on the net.

I might also add that monitoring your child's diet, and eliminating certain preservatives, and food dyes that may trigger ADHD behavior is something worth thinking about.

Whether or not, you plan to try another medication or simply adopt natural alternatives, I wish you and your family the best of luck. It's a hard and stressful time for all involved, so don't lose heart. With some research, advice and an open minded attitude, I know your child's condition can be improved - and your families as well!!!

Two of my kids were hyperactive. Our doctor just had us "deal with it" but there were some techniques that helped.
Lots of physically active unstructured time outdoors in the backyard, or with friends on bikes, or at the playground.

To have the kids actually get onto a chair and stay there long enough to get through supper -- we had each child run in the yard, making laps around the house. The number of laps depended on age, physical ability, and energy level. As a child would become a little winded, Dad would stand at the door, having that child come in an sit at the table.

About 20 minutes before bedtime we were to give "apple tea" A cup of warm water, a tablespoon of cider vinegar, and a tablespoon of honey. The "tea" concoction was a natural way to assist the child to slow down enough to be able to lay quietly and fall asleep.

See ADD/ADHD on page 7 of http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris Refer your doctor to the website about Ritalin. Take your partner along, and you both need to tell your doctor that he/she has been influenced by overexaggerated claims advocating the use of that medication: that there is now a movement against its overly prescribed use, not only nationally, but also internationally, and that both of you are convinced that it is not effective in your case, and that you need a prescription for one of the alternatives, but not amphetamine related. Adderall is reputed to have low side effects. Others commonly prescribed are Attend, Concerta, and Strattera, but check them out at www.drugs.com and avoid amphetamine related types. Zinc and Omega 3 fish oil supplements may help. A low, or no sugar diet is worth trying, even restricting fruit to small amounts of non - tropical ones, 2 hrs apart, min. No artificial colors/flavors. Minimal preservatives. See www.mercola.com on sweeteners, and ADD/ADHD, and check out St. John's Wort on page 2 (read that page) of ezy-build, and the relaxation methods, and EFT are worth trying, as well.

I did a research paper on ADHD and st johns wart has been shown to make an improvement but it has many risks and unfortunately the benefits do not outweigh the risks. Find another doctor and make sure your child is in a structured environment at home and at school. Also make sure she has a great teacher who uses alternative teaching methods when necessary to help her. Good Luck!
