People aren't always at the phone, so I don't think it looks bad or is unusual. If they leave a message then you should return their call.

I'm sure they don't expect you to hang by the phone every second, but if they had a lot of applicants, they will continue on down the list, probably before they call you back, if ever.
It is how some of them weed out people. It might not be right, but that is what they do.
Hate to say this, but if you were truly interested in that job, you should have checked your phone if you were away, and I would have made every effort to not be away, and checked my messages frequently. Wow, they rarely call back the next day.
Does it look bad? Depends on the recruiter. Some understand, others think you should have been there. Some think it was a statement on how bad you really wanted [or didn't want] the job, some would think you were working at the job you don't want anymore.
You did the right thing, to call them back. Now it is up to them.

If they did not tell you to expect a call, then no, you have no reason to hang around the phone waiting for a call you had no reason to expect was coming. The same applies if they simply said they would call but not specify a time frame. They will know this and not hold it against you. There are many valid reasons for you not to be in a position to answer the phone. However, time is now paramount for you to return the call, otherwise it IS bad form on your part. How do you know who it was that called? Caller ID? What? No matter, you know NOW, so get on the horn and call them back as soon as you can. If they ask, all you have to say is the truth, you were not in a position to answer the phone. You have no need to explain in any detail. Even though you called and left a message, don't let it go with that alone. Call again until you get a person to speak with. Playing phone tag is not a good thing when job seeking. One last thing, did you spend time with the person taking the application? Did they review the application with you, ask questions? If so, that really was a preliminary interview of sorts. If you know the name of the person who spent time asking you questions, drop a short handwritten thank you note in the mail thanking them personally for spending their time. It is a simple courtesy thing, but that simple thank you note has been known to get people called in who otherwise were not in the running or on the short list.

I know the place Drives you nuts but make sure that you have the publisher backing befor you quit. Also the forrest service job the easyest way to get6 in is to be honrably discharged from the military that is the big plus plus on your civial service exams

Yeah, it is. Unless it's in a situation that you can't get to the phone in time, which isn't your fault. You did a good thing calling them back and leaving a message. Make sure to ask them to call you back again. Calls from an employer are usually important and shouldn't be forgotten.

They had no way to know you "didn't answer your phone" or that you had Caller ID. For all they knew, you weren't home. You also covered yourself by calling back when you checked your Caller ID.

No, it looks like you have a life.
Employers generally like having employees that
have some other dimension to their lives than work.
