well lil' fella since you answered my question .. with another question I guess I'll not be rude and answer yours ok? I've always liked trains since I was little ... I figure if you don't know ask, right? I thought this would be a good place to ask questions about some of the things I've always wondered about, there are some very knowledgeable folks here in rail IMO. now I'm not entirely stupid as some may think .. I am capable of figuring some things out for myself .. but as I said .. if ya don't know or not sure just ask someone. I know the thought of a girl likin' stuff that is normally reserved for boys can be a lil' tough for some to grasp. oh and since you was .. ya know just wonderin' .. heres a news flash .. I also like other guy stuff, like trucks, motorcycles, camping, nascar, drag racing, shootin' guns and the list goes on babe .... I'm hopin' I'm not an even bigger freak in your eyes now! ; )

Yes, I know there is one in Maui but don't know much about it.
However, I was stationed for 10 years in Hawaii and did volunteer work at the Hawaii railroad historical society. They keep and restore all the old sugar cane trains at a facility just outside the old Barbers Point Naval Air Station. Many of these trains were also used to transport shipyard workers to Pearl Harbor during WW2 as well as other military uses.
The society has restored much of the old rail line and occasionally runs tourist trips on a short section of the line.
Here is a great link!! ALOHA

They used to have several small railroads, the type that would be called "shortlines" today. They were designed to haul sugar cane, and they also hauled some general freight and passengers in their time. Today there are at least two, maybe three of these old short railroads still in use giving rides to tourists. Because the islands are so small, and most of the population can be reached by boat, railroads never really found a purpose on the islands. Only on the island of Sodor, I guess.

Yes indeed.

The LaHaina and Kaanapali Pacific narrow gage (probably 2 feet if I remember correctly) runs between the two places on the Island of Maui.

It is the last vestige of the sugar cane hauling raildroad that operated there, though the distance it runs today is far shorter, but still steam powered. It doesn't run year round, however.

yes they do! i say this cuz i have been on one...when i was little we stayed in hawaii at this place that had a craft/activity/field trip program for the kids to do stuff while the parents got a moment of silence. we went to a sugar cane field and rode through it on the sugar can train! it was so cool! they also gave us the delicious fresh cane from the fields as a treat while on the train. it was really fun and very memorable :)

I'm sure they do, but I really don't know as I've never been to Hawaii. But it's always a pleasure to answer another one of your questions.

I am curious, why do you ask alot of questions about trains!? I don't have a problem with it. I think it's cool. But just wondering.
