Right now, if you are a United States citizen, then all you need is a picture ID such as a drivers license. The USa government has put off implementing the passport law requirement for all US citizens until October 2008, that is if you are driving or flying into either Canada or Mexico or any other country (you'll need it to get back home). Flying is a different matter. You better have that passport ready to get back into the US from Canada.

I am a citizen of both the US and Canada and I use my passports to get into both countries - however right now proof of citizenship and a drivers license are valid by car.

You need a passport because this is a very violent world right now and you can never be too careful. I would recommend getting one anyway just in case you plan on leaving North America. Yes, it is a pain to get one but they are valid for 10 years and it makes it much easier to travel.

Ever since the actions of that sad day,911.
Soon we will all need a passport to travel Canada, States and others, that's why. The States started this first, then Canada in respect followed the passport issue.
It is in thought to keep track all person's comings and going.
It is for our own protection, safety and welfare.

No. Right now you only need one if you fly to Canada. And starting sometime next year they intend to require a passport by land. But for now you can drive across the border without one.

For the rest of 2007, you only need a drivers licence and birth certificate to travel by car.
Any other mode of transportation, you will need a passport.

I am sure you will love it here.
Welcome to Canada.
Have a nice trip
