What's your budget? If you're looking at a Toyota Highlander hybrid I'm assuming it's at least $35k.

Gas mileage is not a strength of any SUV. The Honda CRV and Toyota Rav4 are about as good as it gets (non-hybrid, at least) and they only average around 21-22 mpg in "real world" driving according to Consumer Reports. However, considering you'd save at least $10k by buying either one of these instead of the Highlander hybrid, and you'll come out ahead anyway.

Why must it be Japanese? I dont dispute they are nice, but Toyota actually had more recalls than General Motors last year. They all have service departments for a reason. But if you must the Nissan models are the most cost efficent.
