generally denominations that have been around longer then the written word and common ability to read use them and continue to do so. the rosary in particular was created by the monks and it was the 150 psalms of David. however they weren't beads they were knots in the cords of the monks. they memorized and focused in prayer on 150 of the psalms as a source of inspiration.they lay people around the monestary saw the beauty in the devotion however being uneducated the 150 psalms were hard to memorize. about 800 AD one of the Irish monks suggested to the lay people they might like to pray a series of 150 our fathers. people started carrying around a pouch with 150 pebbles then the cords and then strings with 50 pieces of wood. it evolved from there to the 150 again qith the mysteries of joy, sorrow, glory and most recently 200 with the addition of light. these mysteries take us through the life, death and glorious ressurection of Christ.
we must remember that prayer in repition is not wrong, however when done in vain it's unappealing to God's ears.

No. As far I'm aware, Chatholicism and Islam are the only two religion who use prayer beads. That's my informed, but possibly flawed, opinion.
Hope you find your answers.

Not even most christian sects use prayer beads. I have belonged to the Methodist Church and the U.C.C., both mainline protestant denominations- no prayer beads.

Not at all. That is a catholic thing. Jesus said not to pray in vain repetition, as the heathen do, thinking that they will be heard for their much speaking. So I just pray as he directed.
