You need to firmly say no chew, take the inappropriate item away, and replace with an acceptable one. Keep stuff you don't want chewed, out of the dogs reach.

buy him a crate. One made out of cage; I'm not a big fan of the porta-crates. Enter "crate training dog" into your search engine. The first night is rough, so don't do it on a work night! Stay near her the first night, eventually he'll be o.k. in it. NEVER use the crate as punishment, otherwise they won't want to be in there. Whenever you can't keep an eye on the dog, put him in the crate. Give him plenty of good chew toys. If they start chewing on something wrong in front of you, a loud NO will do the trick. Don't smack them, this will ruin the dog real quick.

I have been watching a new show on Animal Plant called Me or the Dog. This woman - Victoria Stillwell - uses a technique where she tells the dog - HEY, HEY (VERY SHARPLY) when they do something wrong. Dogs don't like sharp noises and so this stops them in their tracks. Another technique is to tell the dog VERY FIRMLY "LEAVE IT" - when the dog leaves the item alone make sure that you praise the dog immediately. YOUR DOG HAS TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE THE LEADER AND KNOW THIS IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS!!!!
Hope this is of some help.

Get some stuff called Fooey from your local pet store, or from a pet store online. Spray this onto your shoes but be VERY careful not to get it on your fingers. The stuff is NASTY!!! One taste of this stuff and your dog will learn not to chew shoes.
