Give anywhere from $20 on up depending on the following...

1. How well you know and like the child (you said he/she is very dear to you)
2. How much you can afford
3. How much the child needs / if they need money for college or housing

For example, if I had lots of money and I know they might really need it for college, I might give a couple thousand... because I cared about the person and wanted to help.

If I knew that there wasn't a financial problem and still wanted to make a really nice gesture, maybe a couple hundred.

If money was tight and I knew they didn't really need it, maybe $50.

Where do parents get off giving monetary gifts to children for accomplishing things that are common rule? I feel that a pat on the back and a "job well done, i'm so proud of you" will do the trick. It's highschool for pete's sake. It's almost a requirement for children in today's world. I think children begin to expect money for everything little good deed and that is not a good thing. To each is own. You'll know what's best.

depends on what you can afford....

How dear is this child? I would say anywhere between 100 and 500 if the child isn't yours and you are middle class.

If you can swing it easily, I'd give a hundred dollars. This is about how much all my relatives spent on me. I either got a cash, check, or they spent it on presents.

Sue, I was hoping you had some answers here. My step-niece (it's complicated) graduated last week. What should I send here?
