i REALLY want a puppy, and my parents said i could have one, as long and it is good with children. i have a 1 year old and a 9 year old in the house, the can be loud at times, and the little one is still learning. so i need a dog with patience. the children don't pull ears or anything like that, they're just rowdy. i would like a med. size dogs, im not fond of small dogs, and big ones are too hard to take with me places,so im looking for something mellow... any suggestions? thank you =]

I don't know if you would consider it too large, and they DO require grooming, but a standard poodle is great with kids. Also miniature poodles are too (not the tiny ones, the one-step-down from standard size, I get them confused). I agree, though, a 1 year old is a little small for a puppy. You would have to keep a super close eye on the baby to make sure he/she doesn't hurt the dog!! We waited until ours were almost 3 and almost 5 (both potty trained) to get a puppy, and my kids are great with animals....we really should have waited until now (they're 4 and 6), but our dog LOVES our kids, and follows them everywhere they go, so all is well. It was a lot of work to teach the kids how to handle a puppy, though!

Small poodles, I have a minature toy, he's 7 and a half pounds and he is a big baby . You can't give them to much attention, just be careful because small children tend to frighten animals. It just the nature of some animals. Alway's make sure the 1 year old has someone when they are with it , so you can teach them how to hold them, and pet them and stop them if you see them hitting or mistreating the puppy that is what mostly causes the to bite and so on. They need time to adapt to a new home and feel like they are part of the family.

Golden Retriever! This is the best dog for children & they are so patient with children. We have one & our 2 year old absolutely loves him. They are the best buddies & it's so much fun to watch the two of them. I have to say my boy is pretty tough on him at times but the dog is pretty good at handling him. This dog will even let him hang around his dog bowl & even pick it up without any problems what so ever! They really are a wonderful dog for children. Check the breed out on the internet & it should give you the info. you need.

Beagles are nice for kids. You need to be careful with the one year old, regardless of breed. Babies can not be responsible or safe with any dog--24/7 supervision is a must. You may want to read Dr. Ian Dunbars book "Before You Get Your Puppy"--order from Amazon--excellent for deciding on what is best for you and what to expect with kids, training, etc.

Labrador retrievers and Golden Retrievers are very good with children. Boxers are good with children, but may be a little too rowdy.

Greyhounds can be gentle and calm around children.

Any dog will need lots of training, socializing, and bite inhibition.... as well as exercise and a 30 minute walk every single day - rain or shine! (BUt retrievers love the rain.)

Golden retreivers are good, but probably too big for your preference. I suggest a Dachshund (Weenie Dog). They're medium sized, just as adorable as any small dog, but nowhere near as annoying. Dachshunds are good family dogs and guard dogs. They're very protective. They're said to be hard to potty train, but I adopted my Heidi right off the streets and it wasn't terribly too difficult.

Children of that age, whatever you may think, have no business with puppy. Go the pound and see if you can find a gentle Dane or a St. Bernard.

When I raised dachshounds, I never sold one to a family with small children.

Get a "Nanny Dog". One of the Pit Bulls, APBT or Staffordshire Terrier. I have an APBT that is about 55 lbs. They are great with children.
The first time my daughter brought over my one month old grandson and sat him on the floor in his carrier the Pit went and sat by him the whole time he was there. It was like she was saying "I've got him covered".
