for optimum health and fitness you really need 60 minutes of exercise daily, and the higher the intensity the better.
with push ups and sit ups you are really neglecting two of the largest body parts the back and legs. push ups only work the triceps, chest and shoulders which are relatively small muscle groups and make up for very little of the total bodyweight in terms of muscle mass. at the minimum I would add in some pull ups, sprints, plyometrics and lots of stretching. with out resistance training the options are limited with bodyweight only training. cross training will always be optimum for health and fitness so the more varied the exercises that you participate in the better of you will be. a combination of resistance training, swimming, running and jumping is best

In order to reap the full health benefits of exercise you need some sort of cardio. If you add a half hour of cardio a day youll be in great shape before you know it. I find riding a bike the most enjoyable but you can run, swim, or whatever gets your heart rate going for a steady period of time.
