Sometimes breed rescues will have information regarding financial assistance. Most will not front the money themselves, but may have contacts or information to guide you.
If you have good credit, an option would be to apply for CareCredit (if your vet accepts it, some do not). It is similar to applying for a credit card, but can only be used for medical expenses.
Last, if you have any family or friends or church organizations that may be willing to help, or provide a "loan" until you get back on your feet. Talk to your vet, too, to see if you can work out some sort of arrangement. We had a client who was not well off, but every month came in and paid us 50-100 dollars. It appeared as a credit on her pet's record, and accumulated all year until time for vaccines, dentals, etc. She started doing this when she went on disability so she could be prepared for an emergency or could do routine stuff that may be needed at a time she might have been short on funds. It worked great, and I don't think she ever fell into a negative balance.

try your local humane society, SPCA, or PAWS and see if they know of a place. Some missions offer help to low income families. You can also go to Petsmart and Petco and ask if they could help you with the weight gain and joint problems. I know Purina One has a large breed healthy weight formula that is good and doesn't cost too much. Try some of the health food stores to see if they have ointments for your joints. I suspect if he loses weight it will help his joints. Do you have children? Maybe they could walk the dog or ask a local kid or college student if they could help. They could put it down for volunteer work. Try these websites too.

I have a couple of places listed on my site that you can check out.
You can also look into Care Credit, which covers vet bills.
Some vets will also let you do a payment plan.
Hope this helps!

Contact your local humane society hopefully they will be aware of any local groups. They tend to be local groups so they can be hard to find.
