If they do, do they exercise 'less' faith than theists? Is that good or bad? Why or why not?

In my opinion, in both camps trusting reason is a 'step of faith' in the sense that no one can prove the universe is 'rational' or 'reasonable', or that God does or doesn't exist.

Any help thinking through this appreciated.

For one, and that i've got pronounced this many circumstances, you do no longer could be an atheist to settle for evolution! Evolution disproves youthful earth creationism and not fairly theism. Secondly, those scientists do no longer in easy terms 'make issues up'. They stick to a strict peer-evaluation equipment wherein scientists from around the globe heavily examine a undeniable persons findings. in addition they following the scientific technique, making advantageous all hypotheses are examined wisely. Scientists are continuously great-intense of even their very own artwork, they actually attempt to discover blunders. even with each little thing their study would have an impression on international society. THIRDLY, i actual have considered such cells in a microscope. and studied biology, the cellular and DNA in great ingredient. I actual have examine many scientific papers and made a properly-suggested opinion on the difficulty. Evolution is a fact. it fairly is good science. It does no longer require faith. there is data and help everywhere. i wish this solutions your question.

Faith often comes down to making some core assumptions. Science even makes a few core assumptions, such as the idea that two people in the same room can make the same observations (that's observations, not interpretations) about some experiment going on in the room. However, these are kept to only a few, and there are other assumptions that require quite a leap of faith, like "A deity is the only explanation for this thing I see."

Adults should not take things on faith. Atheists do not take things on faith. I don't understand how you can even argue that. I don't believe anything that does not have reasonable backing behind it. To believe something on faith will be to take something to be a fact despite the fact that i have no evidence or reasoning behind it. That is faith. Nothing in atheism is taken on faith. Almost everything is up for questioning

Faith is what your preacher says you must have so that you will believe in all the other stuff he wants to tell you.

If you insist that everyone has faith in something, then I"ll admit that my faith lies in the human ability to deal with the real world, using human reason and compassion.

I have faith that we are not born as "flawed sinners", we are born whole with brains, capable of dealing with life's challenges unassisted by mythology and supernatural belief systems.

Define exactly what you mean by "faith." If you mean, "Do atheists operate under certain assumptions about the universe?" then yes, they do.

Trusting reason doesn't seem to be an article of faith, since reason is demonstrably dependable.

Um, yeah.... *rolls eyes*

At least no one can say about me that I wasted my life trying to please a mythological tyrant from a Bronze Age fairy tale.

Edit: Zomg, I can't believe that someone could give a thumbs-down to the perfecty logical first answer - fundies are so funny!

1) No, not really.
2) Yes, the universe IS rational, reasonable, logical, and predictable. Thanks for asking.
3) You can't prove something doesn't exist. However, if you claim something does, it's up to YOU to prove it.

they as of a necessity take things on faith.
that being, without a belief in god, they have to put all their faith in the ever shifting theories of life by chance.
