Infant baptism in the Catholic Church remains as the ultimate demonstration of salvation without ANY works at all ... where the very Church that Jesus personally founded freely provides all that is necessary for your child's salvation ... including the water, and the faith.
Do exactly what the Catholic Church requests of you. If not for you, then do it for your family, and for your child.
As for all the other comments to the contrary ... taking chances with the eternal destiny of your loved ones is a foolish gamble ... while baptism ... at ANY age ... is always 100% effective in sweeping sin from the soul, making the baptized a temple of the Holy Spirit, an adopted child of God, a citizen of heaven, co-heir with Jesus Christ, and a member of the Church.
The sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation will provide ample opportunity for your child to make his/her own, personal and formal profession of faith, a few years from now.
In the mean time, go with the flow. It's the right thing to do.

talk to your parish priest. the cost is usually up to you, it is more a donation to the church not a fixed rate. you will need to choose atleast one god parent who will promise to continue to the raise the child catholic should the need arise. again the priest will go through everything with you, explaining the importance and significance of it etc. if you want to be somewhat prepared on the importance of baptism then try www.scripturecatholic.com
for more apt answers you can post this question on the question and answers site at www.ewtn.com where a panel of experts will address this and any other questions you may have. god bless and congratulations on having a wonderfull baby girl.
please don't be discouraged by the protestant/fundamentalist answers they don't have the fullness of truth that the catholic church has, there answers seemd very unchristian. from scripture there is more than sufficient reasons for baptizing infants, why are they so keen to keep the least of these away from jesus? the website i gave covers in detail what scripture actually says about baptism. again god bless.

I believe because your daughter has "sinned" not literally, but because she was born into this world, she has the "original sin" from Adam. Many Christian churches teach that through Jesus, this has ended, and children should not be baptized until they reach an age where they can determine right from wrong, and make their own choices, also they will remember the covenant that have made when they get baptized, some churches also teach that when you partake of the sacrament you are remembering the covenants that you made with God, aka baptism, but if your a baby/young child you can't quite remember. If I were you I woudl baptize her for a purpose not just "because" My Mother baptized me in a Lutheran church, I asked her why and she said to make my Nana happy, she didn't know why babies were baptized, or anything. I think the child should make their own decision, but ultimately as her mother you have the right to any decision.

My oldest is 9 years old and my youngest is 7. They were both baptized when they were 2-3 weeks old when they were baptized. I am not sure now what it cost but, there is a class that my husband, myself took. It was a few weeks long and I remember my kids God-parents took a class too but, I don't remember. It's been a while.
Call the church and ask them for better details.

It all depends upon what branch of Christianity you are talking about. For instance at the non-denominational church that I go to a person who has trusted in Jesus for their salvation just signs up for the monthly baptisms that take place. Younger children are only baptized if their parents testify that they believe the child has understood the message of Christ and what He did for them on the cross. http://www.alcf.net
In a Catholic church they baptize infants. At other churches they may have classes but I wouldn't know. I've never heard of any church charging to baptize a person. I wouldn't send someone to a place to get baptized if they charged for it since that would be a major red flag warning sign that they were not a true church of Christ Jesus.

Hi Natalie,
I'd like you to think first whether what you're doing is the correct thing or not.
I'll read to you the words of the Lord Jesus Christ himself. In Matthew 10:7-8,
"And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons: freely ye received, freely give. "
Is the preaching FREE?
It IS.
Then why are there religious denominations which make their members PAY? Because they're after your MONEY. They're not after your salvation.
Baptism is a commandment of God. Should it be with money payment? No. The Lord says to his apostles, 'frely ye received, freely give.'
Now, I'd like you to know that BAPTISM in the bible is WASHING OF SINS. Let's read Acts 22:16,
"And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on his name."
Is it for BABIES?
Why do babies have to undergo baptism, did they already commit many sins? Let's read Hebrews 5:13,
"For every one that partaketh of milk is without experience of the word of righteousness; for he is a babe."
babes are without experienced of the word of righteousness.
Why do you have to baptized them? So these pastors are just after your money.
You should start considering ma'am.
There are many false prophets that are gone out into the world . 1 John 4:1,
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but prove the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets are gone out into the world."

First of all, how old is she because baptism is a pledge to God and to the christians community. She must be old enough in order to understand the teachings of Christ and walk accordingly. I have know several kids who get baptized, but there are much pressure and they give up. As far as class goes, the church should sponsor that because my church does.

Baptism is a personal decision and a public profession of your faith, a child cannot make this decision, however I have had my son dedicated which is more like a promise to God that I will raise him to know and love him.

How can a small child make that decision? In the bible those being babtised where adults. It is a conscience decision that a person makes as an adult. They may make you feel better but it isn't necessary with God.
Because it should be an adult decision.
Let her decide when she is grown.
