We who have been called into God's family through faith in Christ Jesus and regenerated by the Holy Spirit of God should be separate from the world system of ideology.
"Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said,
"I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty." 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

Jesus said both he and his followers were no part of the world. Followers of Christ = Christians
We are to have nothing to do with politics or nationalism. Our allegience is only to God's Kingdom, no others need apply. We would not be a part in its wars or internal struggles. We would have love among ourselves which cuts out killing each other in wars.
Holding to this code, we would be objects of hatred just as Jesus was. On the flip side, we would be loved by God and his son, Jesus, which would be of greater value.

they were referring to a divideing of the good people and the bad or willfully wicked, people who did live at the time.
The worldly people of those days went to gladiator games to watch people die in the arena and them and their children torn apart by wild beasts. They were great hunters who killed animals for sport. They were vicious and fought wars and murder was the order of the day.
those were worldly people, that he was saying to stay away from.
