A string. I move it back and forth and my cat loves it. My cat also loves chasing balls.

My cats have a toy box. It used to be a jumbo sized litter box, until I needed a bigger one. Anyway, I have filled it up with crackly balls and mice and balls with bells in them. I sit on the floor and throw each toy (or roll the balls) toward the other room. They will run like crazy to chase them down. They also love a shoe string and the laser light and the flashlight. They just love to play. Make sure when you purchase toys that they do not have those little shiny strings on them. Cats pull them off and eat them. Then they get stuck inside the cat and the have to have an enema or surgery. I am not trying to scare you, just warn you. Watch for any loose items attached to toys. If a cat gets something on it's tongue, it cannot spit it out like you an I can. Because of the shape of their tongue, it gets stuck and has to be swallowed.

Well if you want something inexpensive get a ball of yarn, a small pendent to put on the end of the year and go outside get a stick. Take a piece of the yarn tie the pendent to it and tie the stick on the other end. Then hold the stick like a fishing pole and swing it around a little. Or another inexpensive thing would be a small rubber ball to roll around the floor and watch him/her chase it. A more expensive thing to get her/him cat toys from local stores (ex: a scratching post with the little ball and spring on top) but I believe that the more work you put into the things the funner they are in the end!

P.S. You can actually grow catnip yourself.

Well the best thing that I do is get some string and just run it past them. It's incredibly unoriginal, but the most effective idea. I also get those little balls with bells in them, and I can throw them into my foyer and one of my cats will crash into the wall trying to get at it. Another cheap toy is the milk loop. Just take the loop off a new carton and put it on hardwood floor... my cats love to play with them. But they do tend to bat them under the piano and then the loops are never seen again.

Also, it doesn't really count as play, but one of my cats gets very excited when he sees birds on tv, and he'll actually go up to the screen and paw at the images. Especially if it's a documentary type thing on parrots.

the theing with the mice is kinda funny because I let my cats outside and recently we've had storms so they had to stay in for a few days so when it dried up I let them out. Well the funny part about it is that my one cat is a hunter. He brings me a prize every day, a mouse!!!! Sometimes 2! he gets so excited to show me what he's got!!!! it's almost like he's not satisfied about being outside untill he brings me a mouse. and so you know we live in the country and there are lots of woods around so that's where the mice come from!!!
aside from mice my cats like long pieces of yarn or string. i throw an end at them and they catch it and I pull it away fast and do it all over. They like restle with it!! it's pretty entertaining.

My cats figured out the laser in 10 minutes. They want to know what I have in my hand. They have these little toys mouse's they play with. My tuxedo has began to copy me when I'm on the floor doing exercises. I'm teaching her to roll over. Wildest thing I've ever seen. My Siamese fetches, my tortoise shell loves to tease the other cats, and my Maincoon just wants to sleep and make sure I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing to make his live better.

My female cat loves to play fetch with cable ties, so much so that she will steal them if she sees one laying around anywhere. Our boy cat has a small rubber snake that he likes to throw in the air and pounce on. He also likes patting anything small and plastic (like the safety cover for a 3 pin plug) around the room as if he's playing football.

My cat seems to find chasing a bit of string more fun than playing Command and Conquer on the PC.

when I've had kittens (don't mean I've given birth to them, just looked after them!) the very best plaything they've found is ME! climbing up my legs - wear thick jeans! Chasing fingers, pouncing and learning hunting skills on my hands and toes. That keeps them amused for hours, almost as much as sleeping, Playing like that with them helps to socialise, so long as they are removed from your skin when it gets too rough. Then they start to understand how far they can go and don't get too huffy when they are removed! Be a playpark yourself and follow their lead - they'll let you know what's fun for them.

catnip on her fav toys
my cat's a footie fanatic and enjoys chasing after objects so there are lots of plastic balls around and she plays happily with those
she's also an avid mouse and bird catcher so having a tickler with feathers on the ned makes a great target and string that she can chase and outside she likes to play with sticks if you draw the stick on the ground she will chase it

lots of fun

Laser works well, bits of string, crumpled paper - with my cat, anything's game when she wants to play, LOL, batting the fishtank and trying to catch "prey" on TV is very funny to watch.
